Here's what happened yesterday:

Alaa was about to be kicked out by the rose hosting guys. So we decided to move it to my own hosting space as a temp. solution "Sorry all admins/mods/users as we didn't really have time to consult all of you, But such discussions are usually on IRC, So blame yourselves for not joining."

We were not able to get a copy of eglug as rsync or scp'll result in a high I/O and the rose guys were very happy to pull the plug if this happens.

As I'm only running a server with 64M RAM the site was really dead when eglug was moved.

However the mail is still hosted at alaa's because I have no time to configure postfix now.

I've added an extra 64M RAM to get more life to the server ;-) An extra 64M RAM costs 20$. I payed only $7.34 because we have only 10 days remaining.

The money I payed yesterday is for eglug and I need nothing from anyone, Thank you all guys "but if you really want to help, Get me a new harddisk/battery/charger for my laptop :-)". Anyway.

I have no problems hosting eglug forever but I can't afford the extra 20$ for the RAM. As the admins pay for the hosting this is for them:

If you are satisfied with the current performanc, I have no problems hosting eglug, And if so, Is 20$ OK ?

If not, Then we have to find another solution fast because I'm not planning to pay for the next month hosting with 128M RAM.

PS. MY VPS is currently hosting: http://www.foolab.org http://whirlpool.foolab.org http://slacker.foolab.org + http://www.eglug.org

"hope i didn't forget anything".

No plans to host new domains but You Never Know (tm).

the rational thing at this point is to get eglug its own VPS, we've discussed this before and I think the plan of expanding the base of people who pay is a good one.

where do you suggest we should take eglug which hosting provider (not rose)? lets do this quickly before the month ends.

cheers,
Alaa

Linode 64 "not enough": 20$

Linode 128 "currently hsting": 40$

Linode 256: 80$

Linode is fine but it's very expensive.

Rose 256M: 30$

Alaa is saying that it's bad.

shared hosting ? another VPS provider ? ideas ?

Let's check the performance on 128MB,till gathering then we decide if more ram are needed or not.(80% we will need more)

If we had to pay 80$ for Linode hosting.we should think why we do not pay rose 30$ and get it run on .

50$ worth thinking why linode/rose/else.

thats easy to answer.

rose provides a bad service, they're cheap but they suck.

the tech support won't help you with any problem at all, if you overuse resources they turn off your VPS without warning and refuse to give you any info that could help you tune your server.

you don't get full control over your VPS, anything that has anything to do with kernel is outside your control, so you can't setup iptables or play with swapiness values.

end result is you are easily DOSed, you use swap and incure IO overhead no matter what you do.

Alaa

Currently we are on Linode and we'll see the performance, we have until the meeting to judge.
If it's ok then I agree with alaa we make a seperate 64M VPS account for the lug on linode.
Also during this time we should investigate alternatives, currently I have nothing in mind because the ones I personally tried are either expensive or affordable without any kind of support (I have a support ticket since last year, propably the admins are on a long weekend)

What about :

I didn't try any of them, but they both have a good reputation, and reasonable pricing, so they can't be worse than rose at least :-). Anyway, the point is, there are a lot of other good VPSs, we shouldn't limit our options to rose and linode.

No, ev1 stinks and I have a bad experience with them.

The best I can do to my enemy is to get him a dedicated server there.

And if their support regarding dedicated is that bad then I'm sure they are very bad.

Al salamo alikom
i'd like to ask a silly question. what is the benifits you gain from VPS instead of Normal server hosting.
i don't have enough experience about hosting so it will be fine if you explain the benifits of it. it may help me to take a decision in my new site hosting. thank you

the thing is we've had very bad experience with shared hosting so far in terms of performance.

since VPS gives us flexibility and control over the whole server it opens possibilities (we aren't really building on these possibilities yet), and at the same time gives us better performance than our previous experience with shared hosting.

also in shared hosting you rely on tech support from outside which takes too long, in VPS we can fix things ourselves.

however these benefits might no be enough to justify the higher cost of VPS what do you think?

IMO we should try two more months with VPS, but this time giving EGLUG its own space (it was always shared with other websites that have the same amount of traffic).

if in these two months we fail to offer great reliability and fail to benefit from the flexibility of VPS we move back to shared.

cheers,
Alaa
