Linux System Administrator
Job Description:
The Linux System Administrator, under the supervision of the Engineering manager maintains all of OpenCraft's operational systems.
The System Administrator is responsible for maintaining the integrity and security of servers and systems used for development and running OpenCraft's applications.
The System Administrator will also conduct system analysis and development, with limited support and direction from professional staff, to keep our systems current with changing technologies.
As new technologies emerge and impact our systems, the System Administrator is expected to learn these technologies very quickly and resolve any problems involved in integrating new technologies with our systems.
The System Administrator is a key technical resource for other Staff members, providing advice, training and technical support for various projects.
In addition, the System Administrator works closely with professional technical staff in the engineering and customer solutions teams in evaluating current systems and making decisions on future deployments.
Specific Responsibilities:
Manages Linux servers and workstations ensuring smooth operation.
Manages LDAP directory services.
Manages networking infrastructure services.
Plans and implements standard data backup infrastructures.
Plans and implements system security policy, to include firewalls, host and client access, file permissions, and user accounts.
Conducts growth analysis and capacity planning, and develops capital and operating budget proposals.
Documents the design of the operating environment.
Researches, evaluates, purchases, installs, configures, and troubleshoots all hardware, peripherals, and equipment necessary.
Troubleshoots networks, systems, and applications to identify and correct malfunctions and other operational problems.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum
- -5 years experience working with Linux systems.
Knowledge of Perl and Shell scripting.
Proficiency with Linux and Windows operating systems.
Understanding of the administration of SQL database servers such as PostgreSQL and MySQL, and secure web servers such as Apache with mod_ssl.
Experience with different Java frameworks;Tomcat, and Jboss experience is a plus.
System-level security procedures, familiarity with cryptography tools (e.g. secure shell, OpenSSL, IPSec).
Experience maintaining servers for standard Internet services such as DNS, NFS, DHCP, Samba, printing(e.g. CUPS), and LDAP services.
Experience with troubleshooting hardware.
Ability and motivation to learn new technologies quickly and with minimal support and guidance.
Effective communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of clients and staff.
Experience in Configuration Management and knowledge of a versioning system- (SVN, CVS) is desirable.

Apache Tomcat is not a java "framework", it's "the servlet container that is used in the official Reference Implementation for the Java Servlet and JavaServer Pages technologies.", while Jboss is an EJB container (widely, but mistakenly, known as an "application server") and it uses Tomcat for the web tier! Web "frameworks" are built atop the Servlet and JavaServer Pages API (think Apache Struts).
