Hi all, I m a newbie to linux. i have win 98 in my system with P2 processor. it is the only os. i was about to install RHL ES 4 to my system thru GUI:- While creating the partition table, i got the following message: "The partition table on /dev/hda is inconsistent. there are many reasons why this might be the case. often, the reason is that linux detected the BIOS geometry incorrectly. however, this doesnot appear to be the case here. it is safe to ignore, but ignoring may cause (fixable) problems with some boot loaders, and may cause problems with FAT file systems. using LBA is recommended." And it gives 2 choices "ignore" or "cancel"
The next screen gives :- "the partition table on \hda is unreadable. to create new partitions it must be initialised, causing the loss of ALL DATA on this drive. this operation will override any previous installation choices about which drives to ignore. would u like to initialise this drive, erasing ALL DATA?"
Can someone help/explain about this? if i proceed with installation of linux, will i lose all data in win? how should i proceed?
i have not had any major issues with win & dont suspect any issues with harddrive.
Thanks.
Re: error in installing redhat linux
Hi, Thnx for the reply. i refered to The Installation Guide thru the link u provided. it says the reason for the issue as: "you may not have a partition table on that drive or the partition table on the drive may not be recognizable by the partitioning software used in the installation program." and that: Users who have used programs such as EZ-BIOS have experienced similar problems, causing data to be lost (assuming the data was not backed up before the installation began) that could not be recovered.
while it gives the reason for the issue, it doesnot give a solution. the only thing it states is this: "No matter what type of installation you are performing, backups of the existing data on your systems should always be made."
Backing up of data is not a problem. but if i proceed with the installation of linux, does it mean that windows should be installed from scratch?
is there an alternative to retain both?
thanx again.
