For those who don't know, Darkness Wolf is legendary for his ability to trick the innocent "rm" command into doing something disastrous.
He has regularly destroyed his home computer for the last few years, and he also deleted /etc/ on a relatively important work box some months back. We keep him in handcuffs in the office now and we have hired an MCSE to type the commands which Darkness Wolf reads out.
In summary, the Darkness wolf option is only for the totally hopeless cases.

Um, I've made a machine totally unbootable with root.
So I'd say 1 serious mistake

I moved /lib/ld-linux.so.2 /var/chroot/lib
Submitted by Pronco on Wed, 21/12/2005 - 20:14.
That wasn't good. as no more processes could be launched
Which meant I couldn't move it back to the right place and couldn't reboot the machine.
I was trying to chroot an irc server and I meant to type 'cp' and typed 'mv' instead and then thought "shit." and then nothing at all worked any more.
I moved it, and no more programs could run.

Yeh. I generally install busybox on Linux machines now.
But I hadn't installed busybox.
And I didn't have another intel machine to static-build busybox on to upload using the (still-working) ftpd
The only solution is to boot with a livecd and move the files back.

Few months ago, I was doing lots of heavy full / backups on my new 160gb hd, then OH! I wasn't using the preserve permissions flag.
I didn't want to backup all that again, I quickly looked for a way to sync permissions between two directories, didn't find that. FINE! time to write a php script!
It's stupid to do this, but I was eager to write lots of php cli back then.
I wrote the script like I was writing a post, It was night, I was so sleepy. I didn't stop for a second to think about what I'm actually writing. I hit C-s C-q on jedit to save and exit, C-M-F2 to get my user shell, $ chmod +x syncperms.php then $ ./syncperms.php / /path/to/backup
That was without doing a single test to the script. The real problem is, later, I figured out that instead of C-M-F2 I did C-M-F1, unintentionally, which gave me the root shell --that I usually leave open-- instead of the user one. The script was executed as a root. Result? Needed to reinstall my distro which had all its file system permissions fscked up and fix my ~ permissions manually.
It wasn't my day :-(
