Dear all This is my first message on the forum and I am so happy to know join the first Linux forum in my homeland :) Now.. I have just successfully installed Mandrake 10.2 2005 Limited Edition. I have a Speedtouch USB ADSL modem Rev. 4.0 (Sliver colored). The same problem with connecting to the Internet.. The modem is recognized and all the leds are green, but no connection either with the Mandrake Control Center or at Reboot. I have carefully followed and executed every step in (http://www.linux-usb.org/SpeedTouch/mandrake/index.html) but NO WAY.. Although the procedure is for 10.1 but this all what I have found for this problem. I assure you that I did not miss a single step but it never connects. I also made sure that all the packages are installed. Please note that my ISP is LinkDotNet, I have contacted them but they have no tech-support for Linux, however I have contacted them to know the VPI/VCI (0.35) when it has to be needed in the procedure of the previous link as it was not among the ISP's listed. Guys.. all seems to be OK but NOOO CONNECTION :(

PLEASE HELP :(

Thanks

Well it DOES work

Hey seinfeld,

I've tried the SpeedTouch on MDK a couple of months ago, it gave me a hard time but it DID work. I'm sorry I don't remember how exactly, but I remember it was kinda easier to run it on Knoppix. Give it a try.

I know I'm not being helpful here, but if there's any way you could get the SpeedTouch Ethernet modem instead, then please do. I hope you didn't buy the thing ??
The ethernet interface doesn't need any drivers and is guaranteed to work with any network-aware OS. It's also pretty easy to configure. IMO it's worth the extra money (rent). If you're gonna buy though, then study your options and ask for advice.

btw, cool nick ;)

Other distribution .. may be...

Hi ShErbO

Thanks a lot for the reply. My friend, please try to remember :( how you got it working on MDK. Is your version the same as mine (2005 Limited Edition) or was it 10.1 or less ?? Well. NO I did not buy the thing it still on rent however I think the rent for the Ethernet is much higher. As for your suggestion for Knoppix. I do not have it but you know, I have installed Ubuntu, I can try it and see. The point is that Ubuntu has the highest hits now on http://distrowatch.com/ also it is only one CD and I do not have that much speed on my Internet connection to download 3 or 4 or 5 CD's. One thing I hated it for: It does not see the /mnt files for Windows (sometimes I need to access them though .. Ughh). Well, I do not know why. Have you checked Ubuntu before ??

Well, you seem to be a Linux Guru, so what is the distribution you'd recommend other than MDK?? I am used to MDK however, I am open for tries.. What do you suggest the most for GUI, fancy options etc..?? However, my problem now is to get the internet working, so if you recall how you did it with MDK, please let me know :(

Thanks buddy

;)

Hello, I was using MDK 10,

ShErbO's picture

Hello,

I was using MDK 10, but there's no logical reason why it shouldn't run on 10.1 or whatever (newer) ones. Sorry I really can't remember how I did it, but I remember trying many drivers from google until one of them worked. Knoppix consists of one disc called a LiveCD, which means that you can boot & run the whole system directly from the CD without installing it. Of course it wouldn't hurt to give it a try on Ubuntu.

Well actually I'm not a linux guru, I'm just an experienced user. Been using Linux on my desktop for a couple of years now. My distro of choice is called MEPIS, it ranks 5th now on distrowatch. MEPIS & Ubuntu are quite close in that they're both Debian-based. I haven't tried Ubuntu though because of the weird "no root account" thing. I prefer MEPIS to MDK because MEPIS uses the "apt-get" package manager while MDK uses RPMs. In case you're interested, here's the mini-review I wrote about MEPIS. http://www.eglug.org/node/674

GUI's ? Well KDE & GNOME are the best ones for newbies. They're easy and are quite similar to the windows experience (without the blue screen), but they're quite heavy on the CPU though. XFCE is a really nice lightweight environment. Personally, I alternate bet. GNOME & XFCE.

Just keep trying, and don't lose hope because there's nothing as fun as having a Linux system online :)

MDK 10.1 now. Nothing either

Hello..

Thanks for the reply my friend. Now the latest is I have uninstalled Mandriva 10.2 and installed Mandrake 10.1 for 2 reasons to give me piece of mind. The first is that it is an "Official" not a "Download" as 10.2. The second is to match that 10.1 article that looks really neat and it is may ne te clearest step by step procedure http://www.linux-usb.org/SpeedTouch/mandrake/index.html. Well, I am just clinging with every hope here :( I follwed every step of the link and the Result >>> Nothing. I am so dissapointed..

The only drivers available are the files are KQD6_3.012 for Rev.2 modem and ZZZL_3.012 for Rev.4 which I have now. The steps are easy to follow as you see but I got nothing.

I have tried Knoppix 3.6 as well, tell you what it did not work either. It looks too cluttered too. I even wrote an email as requested in case of problems in the link. I did not a reply except suggesting an Ethernet modem too :).

But the point is that many people have succeded. i don't know what is wrong??

OK, are you usinga USB modem too ?? If so I will just switch to MEPIS.

I know my friend, nothing better than having a Linux on line it is worth trying, but I have been now 3 days :( Let me know if you have any suggestions and thanks again

Good News

ShErbO's picture

Something suddenly came up to my mind: A while ago someone was asking abt the same modem and I remember answering him. I searched the LUG (search button on the left side-bar) and here it is.

http://www.eglug.org/node/630

Basically, it says that you'll have to download 2 files from the given website (script + firmware). Please get them both and place them in the same folder on your linux partition. DON'T UNZIP THE FILE. you have to be root while doing the whole process. Then edit the script and change the required info (login, VPI/VCI etc..) Then run the script. This IS the way to go. please keep trying and give me the feedback.

I think there is a typo

Hey.. Thanks for the reply

I think we are somehow closer.. OK I have run the script.. I have an error coming as the file executes touch: cannot touch: 'No such file or directory'.. I will edit the file and revise it then give you the feedback

TTY soon

Thanks a lot

Yepp we're getting really clo

ShErbO's picture

Yepp we're getting really close now. awaiting your reply. Quick notes: place both files in the same directory. do this as root. don't unzip.

Some errors my friend pls help..

Hey friend.. Now I am facing some errors here.. Now I have tried the following:

1. I put both files in (a window called win_d partition that I can see from Linux instead of the floppy .. or whatever) it is /mnt/win_d/speedtouch-adsl and also the other zipped file to be /mnt/win_d/SpeedTouch330_firmware_3012

2. Into MDK, I logged as a root using su, typed: /mnt/win_d/speedtouch-adsl.sh

Note I did not add the values to the macros, username, psswd and VPI_VCI in order to see what will happen

Result : The file compiles fine and an object window prompts asking to choose the country, I have chosen Portugal as it has the same VPI_VCI of 0.35 (I can add Egypt later in the script but.. later)

Clicked OK

I am now prompted with the Username >> Bingo, I entered it and Clicked >> OK

I am now prompted the Password >> Bingo, I entered it and Clicked >>OK

Now, I get a 2 sec pause and the shell window scrolls forever showing the error: $ touch: cannot touch:' "No such file or directory

I have repeated the steps carefully again, same thing.

3. I entered now the empty varables (userbname, passwd and vci_vpi) as a trial. I got the error $ :bad interpteter "No such file or directorysh" but no scrolling this time..

It seemed it had worked with you, I think it is something trivial but I do not want to alter the script before getting back to you..

Am I missing something my friend ??

Waiting,,, Thanks

Weird !!

ShErbO's picture

Okay that's getting pretty weird...

as root, please do the following: ls /etc/ppp/

And post the results.. Sorry this is getting boring for both of us, but now I'm really determined to figure out what's going on :)

No give up !!

Boring ???, Apology ??.. Come on... I who should apologize for being boring.. Your help is very very much appreciated. I am so grateful..

Now, my friend.. I have noticed something yesterday.. If we visit the MDK page http://www.mandrivalinux.com/en/hardware.php3 you will find a neat list of hardware compatibility. Just choose the device etc.. You will notice that the Speedtouch 330 is compatible AND certiified for MDK 10.0, the version you were using. While it is only compatible not certified for 10.1 which I am now using. Well, it sounds that it does not make a difference but.. that what's there. So please pay it a visit and check for more hardware if you are interested..

Now, I will check your command and do as well what is in this page which I have found just googling, http://speedtouchconf.sourceforge.net/.. It has adifferent version of firmware, right ??

I will try both and get back to you.. Again your help is very much appreciated and thanks a lot. This is in fact good and experiencing for boith of us :) TTY soon

Seems good to me

ShErbO's picture

The site you mentioned seems easy & straight-forward. Have you tried it yet ?? Note though, the guy recommends that you don't have the alcatel software installed. Guess you will need to remove it.

Regarding the "not certified with MDK 10.1" issue, it's okay. Since the modem has a green tick mark it means that people have got it working alright.

BINGO !!!! but :(

Hello..I am online...At laaasst :) :) But ...

I have followed the link step by step especially the "example" in http://speedtouchconf.sourceforge.net/script.shtml. Everything went well but I would like to add the follwing hints otherwise it won't work

1. On http://www.linux-usb.org/SpeedTouch/mandrake/index.html. The firmware that's on the Alcatel's site never worked with me, although it was recommended in I have visited for the silver modem. The only one that worked is the last stable version of the script (6th March 2005) and the the firmware "this firmware" which is rev4fw.zip is the one. N, no need to remove the old software mgmt.o .It will automatically remove it.

2. Also never transfer to the working directory sourceconf-dd-mm-yyyy the file alcaudsl.sys, otherwise it will take preference on the .zip file and this will never connect. (Please refer to FAQ)

Everything worked as scheduled in the "example"..

==================================================

To automatically dial-in when the PC boots up :

/usr/lib/lsb/install_initd speedtouch

Do you want to set this up now? (Yes / No)

=============================================

But.. When I answer YES to the question, it NEVER connects on reboot. I have to connect manually everytime I turn on the PC by /etc/init.d/speedtouch start (please refer to FAQ). The init never succeeds. I get the following error when I answer Yes

usage:

chkconfig --list name

chkconfig --add

chkconfing --del

chkconfig [level

init command failed

Well, a success though, however why not let it work as it should be, why it does not dial up and connect at reboot ???? I apologize if it was boring but.. Thanks a lot ShErbO, your care is really appreciated we made most of it buddy.. :)

Glad it worked

ShErbO's picture

Pleased to help you, and thanks for clearing it up for the future SpeedTouch users in the LUG.

Thanks and...

Thanks a lot.. I will try to solve that No Coneection at BootUp issue I told you in the last post with speedtouch forums. I think it is an issue.. well if you know something about it.. let me know. Thanks again.. Follow me there http://www.eglug.org/node/1509 for another topic if you like.. :) Thanks again
