Any Amiga people

I know this is not exactly Linux, but it is related as an "alternative platform", and I think several Linux enthusiasts were at one time enthusiasts of other such things. Is there any one here who uses or used to have an Amiga computer? I am thinking of forming a SIG for users of Amiga and other such old/alternative systems in Egypt.

I am also looking for help with getting my old Amiga 2000 working again after I took it out of the garage and found it is dead. :-( There's a big stain on the motherboard leaked from the clock battery, but not even sure if that's the problem. May be just a bad processor or other chip since the power LED comes on.

I'll leave it here for a couple of days to get your feedback and suggestions and then I'll send it to the GQview developers.

Appeal to Drupal Translators

As some of you may know (and most don't), I have recently taken over the coordination of the KDE Arabic translation project [1].

I have seen some excellent work done by you guys when translating Drupal and seeing that Drupal is more or less fully translated I was hoping that some of you would want to give a little bit of that love to KDE as well. KDE has a long sad story of being the first Arabic desktop environment to being the most lagging behind.

We have until Nov. 12 before they release the newer version of KDE on Nov. 13 to do all the work we can do. We are currently at 64% with a _lot_ of work to do.

Question about startup

Salamat Everyone, I know this an idiotic question but don't blame me :). I have a NetoDragon modem (SmartLink chipset). To make the modem work a module has to be loaded (slamr), and a daemon (slmodemd). Now I want to know how can I run the modules on startup, and I also need to know how to run the daemon on startup.

Thanks,

How to get processor's temperature without I2C support?

Submitted by OneOfOne on Sat, 28/08/2004 - 19:18.
( categories: Miscellaneous )

Well... i2c doesn't like me that much (and the feeling is right back at'cha you bastard), so i found a way to get the temp. directly from ACPI.

[/usr/src/linux] -> cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/temperature temperature: 35 C

this *should* work with most recent processors. I'm not sure about kernel req. but it works fine with 2.6.8-rc4-mm1 (+ reiser4).

I have installed Mandrake 10 just few days ago and opened it and starting to practise during reading Rute.pdf. today when I tried to open Linux it didn't open the normal window but it opened the terminal window and asked about login name and passname, when I entered them, it wrote the last loging time and I couldn't exit from the terminal mode. How I can exit the terminal mode to the regular GUI desktop, and why this happens and how to return it to the original status.

what's your favorite video encoding app/settings?

Submitted by OneOfOne on Thu, 22/07/2004 - 15:10.
( categories: Miscellaneous )

Well the title says it all..

here's my settings to encode a normal HQ hdtv rip from mpeg2 to xvid with mencoder (cvs) :

pass 1 :

mencoder boo.mpg -ovc xvid -xvidencopts pass=1:qpel:hq_ac:vhq=2:turbo:stats:max_bframes=2:autoaspect -nosound -o /dev/null

get the average bitrate from the log

pass 2 :

mencoder boo.mpg -ovc xvid -xvidencopts pass=2:qpel:hq_ac:vhq=2:turbo:stats:max_bframes=2:autoaspect:bitrate=${AVGBR} -oac mp3lame -lameopts vbr=3 -o boo.avi

If the video has black borders then you can detect them with :

mplayer -ao null -vo xv -vop cropdetect boo.mpg

AZERTY on console

A belgian friend of mine has a laptop that comes with a belgian keyboard. He wants to be able to use the azerty keys with arabic on X. And only AZERTY on console. So I configured XF86Config manually and added:

Section "Keyboard"
    Protocol "Standard"
    XkbModel "pc105"
    XkbLayout "be,ar(digits)"
    XkbOptions "grp:rctrl_toggle,grp_led:scroll"
EndSection

And it works great for him and he is very happy.

But the problem is that the console configuration is using a US QWERTY keyboard. My question is, where is the configuration file for the console keyboard configuration ?

I want to know how may I add a font to my RH 9.0? It is easy on mandrake, but not on RedHat 9.0!

It is because I have installed adobe reader to my RH 9.0 and when initiating it, it said, charset UTF-8 is not supported and tried to use another font, what should I do?

Installed software in Slackware doesn't always get fully removed when doing 'removepkg' because the software might create files, and folders it needs to run. It is therefore a good idea to know how to remove the software by hand to get rid of it completely. As 'root' type the following command:

# updatedb

This updates the slocate database

Once the database has been updated run this command next:

# locate name > log

Replace name with the name you're searching.

Then with a editor open the log file, and look at the results. Then you can remove those files and folders you have found.

some findings about reiser4

Submitted by OneOfOne on Mon, 07/06/2004 - 20:37.
( categories: Miscellaneous )

Well, I've been using reiser4 for over 3 months now and using it as my / partition for about a month.

here're some interesting findings.

1. It IS faster than every file system out there, including reiserfs v3.6, no benchmarks but the system starts faster, games load faster, copying files is faster, etc.

2. It handles power going out/computer freezes pretty well (better than reiserfs/ext*).

3. old snapshot in speedy-sources worked fine but mysql database went corrupt randomly under heavy usage and bittorrent/amule had corrupt downloads.
