HI and asalaamu'alaikum

Sorry but I am new to this site and have really joined because I need some help.

I have experience working with webs but this is all in english (roman text). I am now doing some freebee work on a site that requires a mix of english and arabic. Problem is, i generally use bluefish for my editor but I cannot find an easy way to enter the arabic text i require.

Although i can touch type in arabic i have very little understanding of this language. english is my mother tongue with french and malay being second and third.

does anyone have any suggestions for a possible tool. I also use linux for most work but do have a dual boot if required. I currently run suse 9.1 but am changing over to mandrake 10.1 because of my feeling it is a better development base than suse.

any and all help is much appreciated.

Daud

just tried bluefish on Mandrake 10.1 and adding arabic text works fine.

what is the problem exactly, what happens when you switch keyboard layout and start typing in arabic?

btw it might help if you put tags in seperate lines, this way you get full bidi effect.

cheers, Alaa

Thanks for the information.

I guess the problem is that I am still using Suse 9.1, have enabled the arabic font but am uncertain as to how to switch the keyboard layout. Also, as I have quite a bit of the arabic text keyed into a document already, I have tried to 'cut and paste' into the page but has not worked (just shows ?????). But.. if you say it works in bluefish, I will continue to press on until I find out what I am doing wrong.

I can do this in windows rather easily but, as I am committed to linux I want to do all work in this environment.

I am still downloading the 2 disk of Mandrake 10.1 and haven't switched my platform yet. I do have some support here (in Malaysia) to help with the Mandrake side of things but he has suggested I wait until I load up Mandrake before I proceed with this any further.

But.. thanks again Alaa for the the information concerning bluefish in mandrake.

I'm not sure where the problem is.

two points to note about Mandrake arabic support.

Mandrake has 4 packages of arabic fonts, one comes with the CDs and three are in the contrib repositories (you need to download them), I recommend you grab them all.

another thing is, arabic on openoffice might (I'm not sure) not work correctly unless you install a special freetype package (you also need to download this after install).

cheers, Alaa
