( categories: Website)

Hi all, i've finished xams and will start work on the design of our website men delwa2ty.

The plan is as follows:

  • First, i'll strip out all styling from the Html generated by Drupal and then make sure that the generated Html is valid.
  • Design Layout of the site:
    • with one side bar, this will be the only css guranteed to work on IE till IE 5.
    • with two side bars.
  • Make the site navigatable without depending on the sidebars.
  • Formating the content and choosing colors for the default theme.

i'll need ur opinion and feedback, screenshots from different browsers too.

if u can come up with any mock ups or color schemes, plz do.

this is an old thread but i thought of posting to it instead of starting a new thread in order to reduce redundancy.

i just wanted to know if it's just me or other people also don't like so many things in the current website design, here's what i don't like about it:

1- the icon bar, it's very confusing and takes huge space.. and i don't really think it adds anything to the style, i just ignore it.
2- the right bar is too wide
3- alot of useless items in the right sidebar including, (New forum topics: , Egyptian FOSS News , Linux Counter Egypt Statistics , Syndicate , NewsForge, Who's new) and also the latest articles queue is too long.

also i was thinking about either removing the left bar altogether or using it for user and navigation menus while dedicating the right bar for the rest of the things.. having too many items in one bar isn't very convenient for me (too many in a way that i have to scroll 5 pages to reach the bottom of the menu using resolution of 1600x1200 , 2 is enough) .

opinions?

2- yep the right bar was too wide because of trying to accomodate IE, we finally gave up on doing a clean implementation and our upcoming 4.5 based website will use a table based layout that works on freaking IE so the right bar will not be THAT WIDE, but I still think it should be a bit wider than usual.

3- you are right about syndicate, we can add a small icon in the footer instead, the latest articles queue was not a configurable thing before, but in the latest version it is configurable, and we'll stick to 5 entries only.

I strongly disagree on the rest.

another thing though, we've been dreaming of a better navigation system, 4.5 allows us to create custom menus, tabs and tab submenus, so we can clean up the navigation menu and make it very small.

cheers,

Alaa

at least the bar blocks should be rearranged a little bit , to me , who's online and upcoming events have higher priority than everything except active forum topics, poll and latest articles.. and ofcourse the user and navigation blocks , this is the order which i think is best , user and navigation menus (after shrinking them) , active forum topics , poll , upcoming events, latest articles, who's online and preferably all user names in one line instead of name per line, and then the rest in any order, and maybe the left sidebar should be used for one or two of these blocks ..

... ..

reordering is fine by me, will implement it when we upgrade unless someone has other suggestions.

will look into moving info out of sidebar to sonewhere else
