We were thinking of having EGLUG courses, free software courses given by EGLUG members to EGLUG members. We spoke with the ppl at the Culture Wheel Center (Sakiet Abd El Mon3em El Sawy) about the possibility of using their lab to give the courses, they thought it was a great idea and they are willing to lend us the lab :)

So we want to make a list of the courses that some members are willing to give and a list of the courses the members want to have.

If u want to learn something or if u can give some course, plz post about it here.

cheers,
Manal

this is very nice idea , it help the members with linux experince to get teaching experince and the newbies 'like me' to get the linux experince . but i know that to use the computer lab and the library in sakia u must be a member so all EGLUG going to be members in sakia ?and what about the fees?!. i think ' linux --> essential skills ' course will have great popularity.

Sakia membership costs something like 20 or 30 LE a year, so its not a big deal at all, and they deserve it for all the help they're giving us.

hmm can you explain more what is Linux -> Essential Skills (what are the essential skills in your opinion)?

cheers,
Alaa

We want to show people that linux is good.

Why would we do something silly like showing them xfce?

And where are my asbestos boxer shorts?

No but seriously, I think we could all do general desktop usage. It is not much more than just showing them how to press the power button and illustrating that just because it is linux and not windows doesn't mean it will blow up, and showing them the common programs, etc.

I am considering telling the Sakia people that they can announce these classes for their members in case we don't get enough people here who want to learn...

it's a very nice idea of course, but why is it only for eglug members?? we can give courses to anyone who wants to get to linux. And this could be a very good beginning to free software, free courses!! people need to learn sharing and volunteering before they learn linux.

I think we'll use the EGLUG meeting on 03/07 to finalize details of the courses, such as who can attend, how do we advertise, etc. I have spoken with the people at el Sakia and they would love to be bale to announce linux classes on their mailing list, which has as I recall 4,500 subscribers... That is one option.

Hellozzzz
This sounds like a cool idea

I didnt read almost any of the replies or even most of the
original post, fa i can be completely redudant or off topic

anyway

I like the idea, I think it will be useful

Many times, i need help in lots of little things irc, or the forums, can be akward for such things a face to face mentor, might be cool

i would like to have, like after each course (if this will be a weekly event or something) a trouble shooting session

ppl with problems talk face to face with the more expert and solve their little issue

  • font looks bad
  • a certain program wont install
  • my pc is overloaded with heat
  • etc...

it can turn to a nice, course+ts (trouble shooting), weekly event session thingie
by the way, the arabic is confusing, i want an english only interface >:(

We're planning on deciding all these things at the EGLUG meeting on 03/07 at El Sakia (yes, it is confirmed, noon). Please come to the meeting and give us this input.

snefru, you gave me a great idea; this book can be distributed to students at the EGLUG courses. Something to discuss at the meeting.

Hi Youssef,

Distribute as long as it's in electronic format, not hard copies. Please, read the license carefully.

It may help to put the electornic form (*.html files & pdf files) on a CD and give it to attendees.

This book can work as a referrence, but for start => this is the best ever I saw ...browsing and printing..:

http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/edu/l-dw-linux-lpir21-i.html?S_TACT=104AHW03&S_CMP=ZHP

Get the whole parts for the courses:

- introductory level - intermediate level

Download and print as you can :)

Best Wishes...

I'm glad you're looking at licensing. :)

Tell you what, can you bring these tihngs to the meeting so we can give them to the linux lab at El Sakia? That would be great. When we're there, remind me that you brought them and I'll introduce you to the people running it so you can explain to them what this is and how to use it.

Thanks :)

don't worry we don't plan to turn this into a hellish dictatorship.

and remember once the charter and policies are ratified they protect your rights, and also remember if you don't like them you can change them when they come up for review.

The thing is, average person dont care.

First show them that linux runs better than windows then tell them why linux is good and why opensource/GNU/Linux/GPL are good morally.

I for one moved to (gentoo) linux not because it was "free", I moved because it worked better for me and my needs.

Also using an easy to use distro is a good idea, mandrake is a good bet.

haha, well although i started with gentoo but I'm not crazy enough to recommend gentoo to first-timers, it can be a total turn off!

On a pentium4 2.2 it'd take around 36hours to get base system + xorg + kde, tell that to a newbie and he'll most likely leave linux for good.

personaly I started using GNU/Linux because of the ideals of Free software, I very much doubt that we can know anything as elusive as motive for the average user without doing some proper research.

at the moment we're not strategising, any courses that can be done shall be done (murphy courses).
