The poll is stale

Submitted by YoussefAssad on Thu, 03/03/2005 - 18:40.
( categories: Website )

The poll hasn't been changed in ages; it's been stale for a pretty long time now, since we decided the outcome of the last admin election.

We have 5 admins; what's it going to take to get one of your royal highnesses off their rear end to change it?

about anonymous comments

Submitted by Alaa on Tue, 01/03/2005 - 09:59.
( categories: Website )

what to do with anonymous comments:

  1. queue them until moderator approval
  2. use spam filtering or captcha
  3. just publish them and remove spam later
  4. omraneya queue

although I'd like to point out that this right now is a purely technical problem, when we first decided to put anonymous through moderation queue it was to help maintain the AUP without putting huge effort on administrators (we had no large moderator team back then), but now the main reason to keep doing that is spam.

EGLUG growing???

Submitted by Alaa on Tue, 22/02/2005 - 16:53.
( categories: Website )

I just noticed that we passed the 1000 nodes milestone, I suppose thats a long way for our website.

is anyone wondering about the rate by which eglug is growing?

I made a crude plot of eglug's growth with time using.

green is for nodes and red is for users.

what do you make of it?

even though the growth is steady our active members are still among the first 200 (most among the first 100 actually), how to we engage the new members?

Final Solution to the election problem

Submitted by DarKnesS_WolF on Wed, 16/02/2005 - 01:14.
( categories: Website )

At last YoussefAssad Got for us the solution ( i`m posting cuz he is a little busy )

first of all, we will consider that the issue is too grey to be covered either in the charter or by discussing. So, we need to do two things

  1. Make a note to amend the charter.
  2. decide who becomes admin.

about the second part As for who wins, the current admins will get together and decide. This is the only way to get over this thing. We will decide by tomorrow noon.

Suggestions for first page topic rotation

Submitted by ezabi on Tue, 25/01/2005 - 01:27.
( categories: Website )

In reference to this discussion on Manal's blog, my suggestions would be that moderators get exposed to many daily posts and articles from which they can choose what's suitable to be promoted to the front page, this way we can have an average of at least one new topic or comment change daily on the front page, thus newbies don't get bored from the impression that the site doesn't change each time they visit it.

What licenses should we use? one of Creative Commons ?? or FDL or something else??

Website Re-Organization

Submitted by NewComer on Mon, 10/01/2005 - 06:27.
( categories: Website )

Ok, I've been here since the beginning yet I'm totally lost when browsing this site. I know that alot of effort have been put in organizing the content but I still feel it's a total mess. For example, there's like 4 to 5 nodes about the upcoming elections distributed between articles, forum and wiki.

Anyway, Put yourself in the place of somebody who knows nothing about GNU/Linux visting the website for the first time (a potential EGLUG user). I think he'll be distracted.

Senior Users claim your email forwarding addresses

Submitted by Alaa on Fri, 07/01/2005 - 21:35.
( categories: Website )

We went through the list of users to see who has earned seniority, please check the list of senior users to see if your name is there.

if your name isn't on the list and you think you should be senior according to the Member's Class Allocation Policy don't be shy shout it out loud.

anyways according to the Resource Allocation Policy Senior Users should get an @eglug.org forwarding mail address and a blog on eglug and a personal image gallery.

We will have elections soon

Submitted by Alaa on Thu, 06/01/2005 - 20:01.
( categories: Website )

I know we said this before this time its for real.

elections where delayed because of me finding no time to write the ranking vote module, then they where delayed because we waited until the upgrade to drupal 4.5 was done. then it was delayed even further because we dleayed the upgrade until we moved to a new host, the move to a new host was delayed until we could find a decent host and after finding one it was delayed until we could find a functioning credit card.

A form for reports on EGLUG sessions

Submitted by Manal on Thu, 09/12/2004 - 16:09.
( categories: Website )

Why dont we add a form for the reports of EGLUG sessions, like the software review form??

I think this will make the task of the reporting much easier for many ppl.

these are the fields that I can think of now:

  • no of persons who registered
  • no of persons who attended
  • rating of the session
  • summary
  • link to the facilitator's notes
  • pointers the facilitator gave
  • a photo
  • best/worst thing in the session ??

what else?

Web Hosting

Salam,

Guys we should look into alternative web hosting providers. I dunno who runs eglug right now but it's pretty darn slow. Not to mention the plethora of mysql connect errors I keep getting.

Check out: http://www.dreamhost.com/

Seems to be decently prices PLUS they give you shell access, something hosting providers rarely do these days.

A project marketplace for small and medium businesses

Submitted by kratib on Thu, 21/10/2004 - 16:39.
( categories: Website )

Dear all,

Through my activities as IT consultant and small business owner, I get to meet a large number of fellow SME owners. Almost all of them have the same need: a simple, efficient and extensible IT infrastructure that will not cost them an arm and a leg, either to install or to maintain. Currently, most of those people use illegal copies of M$ Windows, Office, SQL Server, etc. Some of them tried to purchase enterprise solutions from multinational vendors, only to find that the hidden costs of the TCO were unmanageable.

Whenever I talk to any of them about the concepts behind open source software, they immediately understand its benefits for their enterprise and are ready to give it a trial. However, their crucial question is: who will help us implement those open source systems? So far, I have found it very difficult to locate IT contractors willing to perform *paid* services on open source technologies. I am emphasizing the paid factor because with payment comes responsibility to perform.

I am suggesting to the EGLUG community to devote a section of the forum where SMEs can post project requests and where open source experts can propose their services and advertise their skills. I believe this matching will greatly encourage the adoption of FLOSS.

Awaiting your feedback,

Mozilla / EGLUG rendering problem

Submitted by YoussefAssad on Thu, 14/10/2004 - 15:28.
( categories: Website )

Kind of a weird problem here; I just moved from firefox 0.9.3 to Mozilla 1.7.3, and the EGLUG website is not rendering correctly in most parts.

See here.

Looks like the CSS stylesheets are not being applied; but it's not that simple. While the page loads, the stylesheet is loaded and rendered, and then when the page loading/rendering is done it unapplies the stylesheet.

Subsequently clicking on a link from the stylesheet-less page gives "page not found" errors.

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040910 (yea yea, I'm at work)

I think we will need a place to upload our EGLUG documents in different formats , this will be useful for pamphlets ,flyers and presentations.*

we need a place for files with limitation to hold scripts or configuration or even tarballs for themes.

also is needed a section for wallpapers other than screen shoots

we need a section for brochure as it will not fit on wallpapers section .i have designed something like 100 CM * 100 CM for alex courses.

(*)it should be posted as wiki page first then the document file

Hi colleges,

I have a comment about eglug.org website colors and fonts which cause problem with me personaly. I don't what about other users.

The colors which is mostly some degrees of blues with combinations of red degrees doesn't make the content visibale. So it'll be great if u can change the default color scene of the website.

Thanx
