EGLUG to use some free google's products?
Hi guys,
I was thinking about using some google's free products for eglug, like analytics, google apps for domains (gmail and gtalk), .. etc.
I was thinking about the community opinion in this, as we should migrate to a new host so instead of creating our own forward mail server (cause linode doesn't offer email service, unlike dream host we were using), we would go for google apps for domain, integrate it with the current eglug website and create mailing list, have mail boxes instead of mail forwards, .. etc. And analytics to know some cool statistics about our website.
What do you guys think?

I totally agree with you we
I totally agree with you we should use google apps for domains.
RMS wouldn't agree on

why?
RMS wouldn't agree on using some company's service to host our emails and mailing lists? i'm not so sure of that..
about the analytics, it's not gonna be easy to build something like it, may be we can choose google's or yahoo's analytics. and IMHO google is better.

you can use the basic html interface
you can use the basic html interface, or even pop3 / imap services .. you are not locked to using compact-code javascript (note that i proposed only mail and gtalk, gtalk uses XMPP protocol, which is free). The issue that RMS is talking about may not be applicable here..
but about analytics, it's much much worse.. the interface is flash, but u can use gnash anyway :)

The platform isn't free
The platform isn't free (Google's infrastructure), yet...
However, using it will save you many headaches.
Dilemma...

the debate has changed
you were debating about our own machines, but currently you talk about google's infrastructure itself.. well i'm not pretty sure that the current hosting where eglug resides doesn't use non-free components too, neither the firmware of the cisco routers that connects you to the internet (and may be the ones who server fsf.org, too?), or even anything that lives on a cloud.. or vps's that are made using vmware we may be using someday, needless to say the windows infrastructure that lives in some ISPs, ... etc.
I don't say we be happy with that, but it's about if there's alternatives, i would happily go for it.. the alternative we have here is to maintain our own forward mail server, which is totally doable. The question here if we need more functionalities like the ones we will get from using google products, and the saved headache..

I never debated about your
I never debated about your own machines, I am only concerned about Google Apps platform or any other 3rd party services provider.
That's why it is a dilemma, so sorry I can't express my own judgment in this :)

however, I trust Google, and I hope it will oust Twitter and Facebook soon, they have to make more efforts for Buzz though :)

I don't :P
I don't really like google's attituden (after the search and email), especially when it comes to privacy.. anyway i still use their products.
About twitter i'm a microblogging fan already, wish identi.ca takes a hype though i doubt that anyway.. facebook is lame IMHO, but lots of people use it anyway (including me :P). but i still don't think buzz will add something more.. i hate it when the tools become too much integrated with each other.. i decreases your freedom of choice too anyway

Indeed, but the privacy
Indeed, but the privacy thing is just a hype, and there are many evidences show that Google respects users' privacy more than anybody else (including Microsoft which will let Windows 7 phone "home" in order to scan for pirated copies of this system)
