( categories: Events)

eglug.org is now up, obviously, and I personally am fairly happy with how things look for a group so young.

It was suggested on the IRC channel (#eglug on irc.freenode.net) that a real-life meeting might be nice, and I think that it is an idea worth discussion.

Potential benefits:

  1. We nasty fork()ers get to explain clearly what the ideals are
  2. I get to clarify the charter to people (this is probably needed, my english is nasty)
  3. It's good to know people you're working with

Potential drawbacks:

  1. It's a logistical nightmare arranging this

Comments?

Okay. To get things off the ground then, I propose the 30th of June 2004, a Wednesday, for the EGLUG meeting.

The venue can be decided later.

What does everyone think?

most people will finish exams by the 20th AFAIK

al except sanaweya 3ama who won't finish before july so we can't realy wait for them anyway.

I think we should make a meeting the moment it is suitable for a large enough group of people, time is kinda tight, remember we're hoping for real launch by the end of june.

A couple of friends of ours from el Sakia are traveling to Alexandria this week to meet with people from the Alex library to book the place for us in August. As soon as we can confirm that, we start planning.

Yeehaw! :)

newcomers backgrounds on the sociopolitcal atmosphere surrounding LUGs in egypt varies dramatically. Really kudos on such a great job with the site. but -there is always a but- i know you can't help it operating with a certain mindset i.e. that newcomers *know* what you are talking about!. for instance why presume that a newcomer knows that this is a child process (that U actually fork()ed)? using terms like "people you work with" rules out newcomers who have not started any work yet. my repeatedly-proven-wrong opinion is that the fact that most of you guys already know each other has made the tone of this discussion somehow alienating to newcomers. or at best give the impression that it is a private event for acquainted ppl

thanks for the valuable input.

one thing though, this site has not realy been launched yet (we're doing public development as you can see :-)

so its kinda natural for it to sound too private (not only on the child process matter).

now since we are getting a modest amount of traffic and since the launch day is approaching its time we started being more newcomer friendly.

why don't you take over this department??

prod us, ask us questions, lead the way and show us whats confusing and whats not, you have the benefit of an outsiders view.

I can see what you mean.

You can help out with two areas:

  1. Show us the areas/things which give you this impression (will be easier for you to spot than an old-timer, I think)
  2. Show us areas which are omitted which would be required in order to overcome this impression you got (a FAQ? A statement of who we are? What?).

Thanks for the input, amg.

gush i hate being redundant :( but this is what i was just going to say :) - an about-eglug page would be nice - a FAQ with thigs like : Q-0x1A do you guys have realtions with linux-egypt? ... Q-0x1F are you and linux-egypt competitors ? A: no! we co-operate to enrich the community...blah..blah... - some sort of history/background/about page i don't have a clear perception of it

anyways i'll try within-my-limited-abilities to comment out potential areas of confusion

later

sorry those are from the top of my head, also typed in a hurry, i'll refine and add some more isa

fork – child process related:
are you related in any way to linux-egypt ?
is this a sub-project of linux-egypt ?
is linux egypt the “official” liux site in egypt or are you guys ?
did you make this site coz you were forced out of linux egypt?
is this site meant to be a linux-egypt replacment?
will be co-operating with linux-egypt or is this an Ahly/Zamalek view?

General – Charter related:
who is the leader?
no leader, cool can i be one.?
can i create a project or organize an event using eglug name?

First, we need to know how many people will be coming.

Once we know that, then we will know how big a place we'll need.

I'll post a poll on the front page asking if people will attend, I suggest we close it after 5 days and limit attendees to the people who voted yes. This might sound a little mean, but we really need an accurate picture of attendance so we can plan.

no it doesn't as usual MadFarmAnimalz is مستعجل.

I don't think we'll have big demand till the point where we have to turn people away though, all we need to know is an estimate of how many will come.
