Internal Server Error " .htaccess "

Submitted by Pronco on Sun, 09/01/2005 - 11:11.
( categories: )

My websites are not directly related to physical filename paths. I have to use the RewriteBase directive to specify the correct URL-prefix. SO I have to uncomment the # from drupal .htaccess file before enabling htaccess. I'm using the appropriate RewriteBase syntax:

RewriteBase /drupal

Eventually the server does not allow .htaccess to be enabled this seems like a serious overhead.

Affordable, Accessible computing

This is an attempt to articulate few things I been thinking about for a long time, the thoughts here where hashed out while attempting to join the WSIS Arab NGO Caucus and through discussions with the /dev/cabal folks and Adel El Zaim from IDRC.

Warning

thats about the end of the organized well thought out part of this document, my mind is very jumbled, I'm writing this down to help me

oh well in the true EGLUG tradition here is my todo that never gets done for 2005, this is more of an action wishlist, some stuff is really my todo but most is things I wish EGLUG would do and I hope I'll find others who'll help.

EGLUG Website

  • Start the EGLUG democratic election process
    • post an anouncement asking seniors to run AGAIN
    • this time deploy the freaking ranking vote module (which is ready folks)

Imagine if this hack was done to the countless number of redundant satellite dishes in Cairo. At least two dishes will be needed on every building communicating with other dishes on neighboring roofs in a mesh network. Instant free (or extremely inexpensive) connectivity for everyone. But illegal of course.

And, according to this we can point all those satellite dishes to the heavens and connect them and create the largest radio telescope ever! It will make mockery of the Very Large Array.

Vim voted best text editor again

Submitted by Conceptor on Sat, 18/12/2004 - 00:32.

I was looking for some tips on Vim the editor. and it was coincidence to pass on vim.org to find this :

The Linux Journal magazine does a Readers' Choice Award every year. For the fourth time in a row Vim was selected the favorite text editor! Vi and clones came second, GNU Emacs third. You can read this and the results in other categories in the press release. (Bram Moolenaar)

but i think people should not look to emacs as only text editor.

If you use ROX Filer

Submitted by whirlpool on Wed, 15/12/2004 - 13:42.

Several months ago I wrote this ugly bash script to supplement my favourite file manager, ROX.

This script pops up a text entry box, using zenity for your search term. It will then use find to find the files in your home directory, /home/pub, and cdrom. It then creates a temporary folder with symlinks to the matching files, and opens it with ROX.

#!/bin/bash

autosymlinks ()
{
        dir_path=`mktemp -d ~/tmp/gxsearch.XXXXXXX`
        find ~/ /home/pub/ /mnt/cdrom -iname "$1" -exec ln -s "{}" $dir_path \;

I have got a Garmin eTrex Legend handheld GPS unit. :-P

Managed to get 22,710 waypoints for egypt from GEOnet Name server

Loaded all waypoints as csv in Gnumeric. Clicked on chart:

Converted the waypoints file to a plucker document. Placed it on my PalmOS PDA. around 300KB only ! Sorted them using sort first. So locations near each other are near each other in the document. Plucker "Find tool" is fast enough. Not as powerfull as grep though.

Piracy undercover

Got this email with links to "Linux Kit", so it grabs my attention, I clicked on it to end on a page with statements like "It's time to change …" or "It’s the time to change from windows to Linux" (note the way they wrote windowz). And it ends up as those bunch of --self censored expression-- trying to sell pirated Linux training material, so far it's cool, you can just delete this mail.
BUT WHAT DRIVES YOU REALLY NUTTS IS when a friend of your working with M$ says commenting on this stupid mail; "you linux people are spammers and above all you try to promote yourselves through selling pirated material"...

I've been playing around with drupal 4.5 on my website for a while now.

now I did a live test of an EGLUG upgrade, you can see the result on http://test.eglug.org

this is a complete mirror of EGLUG as it stands an hour ago but upgraded to 4.5, please test it and break it, but don't use it for actual content submission.

issues

  • backported locale module incompatible, delete all locale table before upgrade
  • contrib navigation module conflicts with menu system, delete its tables
  • taxonomy_image data lost (tis ok we only have one configured so far)
  • flexinode images lost (need to manually fix all reviews :-(

I HATE EGYPTIANS !!

Submitted by BooDy on Wed, 10/11/2004 - 17:27.

So i went to pray last night at the mosque for "laylat al-kadr". I spent all night in the mosque ... well not only one mosque i had to change places because my beloved Egyptians keeps bringing their under 8 kids to the mosque. I don't know who the hell told them that the mosque is a playground for kids. A mosque is supposed to be a calm place for people to pray but last night i couldn't focus for more than 5 minuts. kids running around, playing, screaming, and finally kicking each others ***. I'm not saying that i love saudis too much or something but i've never seen a guy in saudia arabia coming to the mosque with his 3 kids and letting them run around and bother people who wants to pray i mean their is some people who come to the mosque only once in ramadan and if they had a bad impression who knows when are they gonna come back again!.

finally after a long struggle with the guys from college they approved my graduation project. I'll be teaching linux to the project team (7 guys who were shoked to know that Linux doesn't have My computer). I guess some people really hate me now because i caused their projects to be rejected but what the heck i don't like them anyway. The graduation project will be building a distro but thats not enough i think so i'll have to do something more specific maybe some coding, after all i'll be re-studying C. Best thing is i WON THE FIGHT WITH THE POWER ! :)

while activity here, eglug.org, #eglug and #phaeronix was really low the past week, I assure you we are all still alive and well.
On a side note, here's an update on the stuff in the upcoming version of the LiveCD:
-Updates most notably OOO 1.1.3 and jre1.5
-Hardware detection script: error fixing, and huge speed improvement ( no more compiles ).
-UI : no more xfce dependency, only ROX and gkrellm. This spared some memory.
-less stuff extracted to RAM on startup.
-Better way of ejecting the liveCD on shutdown. ( could still be improved though ).
-As a result of the last two the LiveCD can now boot with just 64Mb of RAM available and still have 24Mb free after the desktop is up. ( confirmed in qemu ).

Gates talking about Open Source. huh!!!

Submitted by ezabi on Mon, 04/10/2004 - 21:12.

Guys, this is hillarious, the so called Bill Gates is talking about open source, and guess what he mentioned some models as "a fantastic thing" when talking about BSD and he says "we tend to favour such distribution license" (maybe because he was talking in the UC Berkley campus), but still he doesn't like GPL stating that "it should be used very narrowly" because it can't be commercial and "tax" generating as he says, for the full video checkout this link http://zdnet.com.com/1606-2-5392970.html , sadly it's in windows media or real format.

Submitted by Alaa on Mon, 20/09/2004 - 16:36.

last saturday while on my vacation I went with MohammedSammeer and Manal to Alex where we had a big EGLUG social gathering.

we met all of EGLUG Alex members except for OneOfOne who found out he was alergic to clean air and sunlight (the whole EGLUG alex population consists of DarknessWolf, LinuxAwy and Sherbo).

we had great fun at downtown alex which is not realy downtown alex, then at downtown alex wich is proper downtown alex, we found out alexandrian geeks don't know anything about their city and had to consult google in order to locate kadora, a net cafe, a coffee shop or even the sea (yes they did not know where the sea was).

after wasting a couple of days exploring the great Mandrake educational software I'm finaly back on track (don't try 3d filemanagers its a farce).

  • agrep - cool a fuzzy grep, a forgiving grep, grep that looks for aproximate matches, what more can you ask for,
  • clamav in case you don't know about it already, this is the best Free anti virus, you use it to scan files going to windows machines of course ;-)
  • binstat tool to give you statistics about your system binary files, very useful for stripping down a distro, tells you how many unused libraries you have, how many unstripped binaries, how many duplicate binaries and man pages etc.
