Alright, now finally to my huge problem. I got this movie, seems like a DVD rip... an AVI file along with a .sub and an AC3 ?! Any ideas of how to run that thing ? I have unsuccessfully tried -audio-file and all that, but I get errors saying: Encrypted VOB file! Read DOCS/HTML/en/dvd.html. Any ideas ? Codecs ? Players ?

I don't get it, you got the audio as a separate .ac3 file or the movie itself has an ac3 sound (standard for most movie releases)?
either way, I'm guessing you're using some weird distro that doesn't compile mplayer with libdvdcss so maybe try to recompile your mplayer against it and cross your fingers.
for the .sub file, if there's an .idx file with it then you can load it by passing -vobsub FileName(without the extension) to mplayer.

I have tried using xine and ogle without much success either. I am running slackware 10 using a patched and recompiled 2.6.10 kernel. I fixed the whole problem using some windows software under wine to convert the ac3 file into wav , then I ran mplayer using the -audiofile option. But I would still like to understand the whole dvd concept. I haven't seen any parameter to xine or ogle that specifies the audiofile to use. So do media players by default look for an ac3 sound file ?
Thanks guys

OoO where are you
You should wait for OneOfOne he's our resident expert on DVD's and the like matters.
Meanwhile you could try with fresh build of Xine or Ogle. I think they are most mature when it comes to dvd players.
You should post more info as to what distro and what player you are using.
