Salam,

Guys we should look into alternative web hosting providers. I dunno who runs eglug right now but it's pretty darn slow. Not to mention the plethora of mysql connect errors I keep getting.

Check out: http://www.dreamhost.com/

Seems to be decently prices PLUS they give you shell access, something hosting providers rarely do these days.

eglug is currently hosted with foolab.org, manalaa.net, devcabal.org. Me, alaa, whirlpool & youssef are paying for the hosting. For sure if when we have more admins we'll have to move eglug to her own hosting space, But until this happens, No more admins "sorry guys, I object to giving a stranger access to foolab.org as it's being hosted in the same space".

Yes the current provider is really bad, And yes we are searching for another provider.

I checked what you provided, It seems good, And they provide a CVS server, Maybe we can move eglug off my CVS server so No one'll complain about it being slow ;-)

The only problem is that they don't provide anonymous FTP access.

sure ssh is mandatory.

Alaa, comments please ??

check out http://www.phpwebhosting.com/host_details.html

while not exacctly the cheapest they seem to be dedicated to offering a good service, googleing around their customers are happy.

it means we'll have to send a request everytime we need service extension like a new database or something.

and off course it means eglug has to be on its own, but I guess thats the best thing to do at the moment anyway.

I'll keep looking for hosts.

cheers,

Alaa

Alaa,

id be careful about sites that are promising unlimited bandwidth. Most go between 20-40GB/month. This site is ok http://websitesource.com/hosting/allinone_details.shtml

but only allows 20GB transfer per months, with $2 extra per gb. What are you guys hitting right now?

I dunno why you guys wan't anonymous FTP access. It's not such a good idea to provide that type of access into a system. *shrug*

at the moment we don't pass the 4GB mark, we would need to look at trends though since our membership (and hopefully readership) keeps growing.

as for anonymous ftp access I don't see whats wrong with it as long as you have special directories for it.

it happens to be the most widespread method for distributing files BTW.

4GB mark? When did this site go live? Are you guys running any web analysis tools like webalizer? You need to find out what the majority of the traffic is.

As for anonymous FTP, what files would you be spreading? Unless you are hosting ISO's (maybe for Phaeronix or Arabix) I can't think of anything that would require FTP access.

I'm too sick to spend too much time thingking about this at the moment, so here is the total bandwidth used everymonth, this includes all websites hosted not just eglug, but the rest is pretty low traffic anyway me guesses.

Month GB

Jul 3.411317
Aug 4.430644
Sep 7.422155
Oct 5.134153

well sounds good, id say lets pick a host quick because these sql errors are getting rather bothersome. Also any reason why you guys had 7GB of data transfer in September?

Salam,

Have we finalized our decision on migrating to a new host provider?

I guess we'll try our luck with one of the last two I found, since no one had any strong recomendations based on experience.

as for hedeya, thanx alot for your effort, we will be more comfortable hosting in a place paid for, but if you want you can help us host large files and packages.

cheers,

Alaa

Maybe Hedeya could setup a torrent for us to grab ISOs from?

I have my own tracker, It's used by phaeronix and I use it for any torrents I want to share. And I'd be more than happy if it'd be used by EGLUG.
