Great Idea if we have the resources.
It would be nice for ppl to request binary packages for hd installed phaeronix, we would compile it and post it and they would download it.
lol

I wish I could install phaeronix on my patients.

No i think lug is not good place for that and the resources will no help here , if so u can get a space on sourceforge or any other developers site.

this is actualy a very common LUG service, to provide extra packages needed by LUG members.

this is mainly due to the fact that some members will create these packages anyway.

note that the idea is not to develop software, just to package it, and the idea is not to compete with the distro makers, but rather to provide simple straightforward packages for things they don't already cover.

the section should of course encourage submiting these packages to well known and well maintained repositories or for inclusion in the distro.

another reason we may want this is to provide easy to use packages of software that we need to test (arabic software, arabic patches for software etc.)

so when we ask people to help debug InkScape we give them a precompiled easy to use packages to streamline the process.

cheers,

Alaa

I don't even know of sourceforge, savnah or berlios would host packaging efforts, these are development places, not packaging places, the tools they offer are either useless or way overkill for simple packaging needs.

as for what kind of packages, anything you already did (thats what started the idea) and anything the community would find useful but is not readily available.

how to measure what's useful is left as an exercise, suggestions include:

  • covered in software reviews area
  • talked about in forum or wiki or IRC
  • related to arabization or arabeyes
  • made by an eglug member
  • was explicitly requested
  • featured in one of our events

but remember, if its already covered by your distro or has a good package elsewhere don't bother.

and we don't encourage packaging just to cover newer versions unless the new version adds important functionality that needs to be tested early on (like added arabic support or fixes).

cheers,

Alaa
