I have installed Mandrake 10 just few days ago and opened it and starting to practise during reading Rute.pdf. today when I tried to open Linux it didn't open the normal window but it opened the terminal window and asked about login name and passname, when I entered them, it wrote the last loging time and I couldn't exit from the terminal mode. How I can exit the terminal mode to the regular GUI desktop, and why this happens and how to return it to the original status.

I am not a mandrake user, but this looks like a runlevels problem. You could have changed the default runlevel from the one that starts X (usually 5) to a one that logs you into console by default. the file: /etc/inittab usually has these settings but editing it is not recommended for noobs. You can start the X and you normal desktop environment using the command

startx

Open your terminal then type :

pico /etc/inittab

then change the current line :

id:3:initdefault:

to

id:5:initdefault:

Best Regards

I used to be indecisive ... but now I'm not so sure

Well u could start the gui just by typing startx

and hitting enter. If X still fails to start, check that you have not filled ur linux partition, see the command 'df'
