Mandrake, finally!

Assalam Alikum,

Oh, yes! I still remember the old days when we used to have flames about distributions (and I really had fun with them). I admit that I loved redhat very much, and I was one of its fans. I tried to use Mandrake and I had to run away from it everytime I install it because one of my packages did not work on it peacefully. I really wanted to use it more than the other distro. but I had a work to do. I almost had nothing in mind but my work. Now I know I am dealing with a LINUX system, which means that one can install anything, download anything and tweak the system as much as you like.

rebooting to another OS

Assalam Alikum,

I use $reboot to reboot my box and then wait for it to do this them from Grub, I choose the OS I want. My question is; Is there a possibility that I can pass my OS to which I want to reboot to the command line so it can reboot directly to the OS I want?

Thank you,

M B

Permissions for my Win Partitions

Peace!

I have installed Mandrake Yesterday. I am a RedHat good user , but as I have time I decided to try it. I have installed Mandy9.2. I have found that my win partitions are mounted automatically, but I can't use them as a normal usr. I can't do $ cd /mnt/win_c/ say. I should be su each time I want to do that. I have a security level STANDARD, I tried the drake tool to fine tune my permissions (from the kiker, configuration-> configure my computer-> security -. fine tune securiy)

Motif in Mandrake

Peace! I have spent some time hesitating to post this fearing of bad comments or critques, but here it is:

This is my problem. I have to use motif in my work with some package. But it is not there in Mandrake. I have tried to download the stuff (I mean Motif anf libtif and also LessTiff) and do the thing myself but never made it. Why don't they add it to their distro? I tell you what, which is strange enough, if you can make the following package work on your mandy, I will change immendiately....Mandy is very easy from my point of view, but It is this motif, and libtif problem.

FreeBSD for Linux users (Orielly Article)

Salam everyone,

Check out: http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/bsd/2004/11/11/FreeBSD_Basics.html

This is a great article on the many differences (and similarities) between FreeBSD and Linux. FreeBSD 5.3 (stable) just came out a few days ago, I haven't had a chance to try it but I highly recommend it.

Also just in case you're wondering, FreeBSD has a linux emu so you can run a lot of Linux based apps, although there are limitations (namely linux binaries with kernel hooks).

Youssuf
