Thin Client workshop

Submitted by ramez.hanna on Mon, 03/01/2005 - 11:41.

i read alaa's blog and i want to go on and do something, so i looked at the suggested projects and i think we can start a workshop on thin clients
a workshop is where we go and start the implementation no one will instruct nor give a session we will do it from scratch and go all the way through learning, implementing and tweaking
i suggest the goal of this workshop is to make a comprehensive howto document about thin clients aiming the regular user (not the techie) and have a working demo in the lab

Can SpeedTouch 330 work under Linux?

Finally I throw my Motorolla Dial-Up Modem and got SpeedTouch 330 ADSL USB Modem. I had RedHat 9.0 with Kernel 2.4.20-8 working on AMD 2500+.

I thought as SpeedTouch Modem is external modem connecting to the PC through USB. It will work with no problem with Linux as I got its Linux driver. But unfortunately it was really complicated task.

It requires special libraries, a modem driver and the firmware to be all compiled. I have tried to follow many How-To's, FAQs and Readme. I took it as a challenge but it seem that Linux complixety is holding me back. All I got is error messages which I undestand nothing from it regardless my programming experince in C/C++. I go into the code but you can imagine, it's makarona esbakiti and I lost all my hair.

Compiling network card driver source

Dear All,

I'm new to Linux. To install the driver of my network card in Red Hat Linux 7.2, I had to compile it.

The driver is in a .tar.gz file, which contains some .h, and .c files, and a Makefile.

So, what are the steps needed to compile this driver? The help file included mentions that the user should compile the driver to have the object file, without any details of the compiling process.

Gaim behind DSL-500T

Is anyone using Gaim on Linux over an ADSL connection using a router?

At first I had a USB Speedtouch modem connected to a Windows PC, and I was connecting with my Linux to the ADSL through the Windows Internet Connection Sharing. Gaim was working fine with ICQ, MSN, Yahoo and IRC.

Now, I bought a D-Link DSL-500T ADSL router, and I connected both PCs (Windows and Linux) through to the router with a switch, and nothing seems to work. Browsing works OK.

I am not sure whether to use port-forwarding or UPnP, but I tried everything and I can't get it to work. Was anyone successful in doing this? The most important thing to me now is to get on ICQ.

Hello, I'm getting this weird problem

I have an external serial modem, but the connection is getting really unusable. The modem is fine, I'm using it under windows and everything's okay.

I tried re-installing MDK 10, the modem got fine for a day or two then it's back again.

note: it does connections fine, IRC & IM is good. but opening webpages is like hell, downloading is impossible.

At the office, I'm sitting behind a MS ISA proxy server. I am clueless regarding networks, basically, so I am wondering where one sets up proxy access. Through the routing table?

Don't spoon-feed me, just tell me generally what needs to be done, like which man pages I need to read, etc.
