hi all
Sun just introduced 2 sites abou java
in addition to the very famous java.sun.com now
java.com
and java.net which looks promising as it is for developers and open source programmers and is a joint effort between sun and o'Rielly

I need someone to explain somethings.
I'm not a developer, but as a user, I think java sucks. I know its platform independent. But java applets and applications seem too slow to me. Beside that if doesn't offer except silly looking chat rooms and unplayable games. Haven't seem except few usefull java applets.I always close the browser window when I find that my JVM have started. Pay a visit to http://www.javafile.com ( which include javascripts and java applets - two things that have nothing to do with each other-) and you'll find nothing interesting. Hope one of the java lovers explain things to me and make me change my opinion..One last thing, were's java in the consumer electronics field?

ok dear
u r absolutely right that java on the desktop is not a solution
and it really have a very little share
but java have it's empire on the small wireless applience (mobile,PDA(the vodafone live service depend on tha java powred mobiles)) and on the server side where the J2EE is the fast growing application server today
and recently SUN announced that it will make a new division to develop and market java based games

Thanks joe for clearing things up.
So Java succeeded in what it was originally invented for.
Why that great fuss years ago about Java being a threat to Microsoft?.
Even if Java have succeeded on the desktop what would that have had anything to do with Microsoft?

yep uniball, blackdown-java..
it's as far as i know is a "hacked" version of sun's jre whatever.
NewComer : imho java was gonna be a threat to MS because java works on all platforms/browsers unlike ActiveX (which imo beats the crap outta java except for the security risks).
i'd go for activex any day...

FYI, there is a guy working on getting Mozilla to do ActiveX. But a more secure alternative. It might be ready by ... In OSS you never know when things will be ready.
If MS wasn't hostile to Java, the concept of operating systems would have become irrelevant. Which means major loss to the software giant.

BTW: Anyone tried Mozilla 1.4rc2 ? I feel that it's much faster!!

ok , i wanna tell u that java is not bad ,really java is good, all it's merits has been introduced in the .NET platform and really microsoft learned a lot from java mistakes and avoided them so the .NET reputetion is far more good than java(especially on the desktop) not because it is better but because there is no the java early day problems(slow, incompatabilities, etc...) which many developers think it is a feature of java not a problem that solved years ago
