View Full Version : Actual LUG Activities

RedHat
I always had that question in my mind. Usually LUGs has more actual activities and goals it accomplish by certain activities.

With all my respect to the efforts here, but do no you think that Linux-Egypt should carry more LUG activities or start to be a real LUG by not only depends on the this forum, but also to seek active contribution in the Egyptian Linux Community?

AlSalamo 3aleikom,

Well there were several attempts a long time ago to have some activities going like having a programming subgroup (dubbed LEPS, Linux Egypt Programmer SubGroup) where we share our experiences and help each other gain more programming skills which ofcourse will lead ISA to more contributions by everyone. Another attempt was to have a Cairo Coverage Team, which would help spread the use of free software. I think we can start out with the former example, the problem that alaa met along time ago (yes it was alaa who started)was that no one joined.

Until recently a week or two ago I thought of bringing it up again but this time maybe we can learn from the past a bit. Unfortunately, due to the exams at this time, I haven't thought out how it will work. Though, one could predict it would work through mailing lists + CVS + (maybe a WIKI).

What do you think ?

WalSalamo 3aleikom,
Maher

Had a small chat with Lordveda, I yanked it below.

<Lordveda> MaherG: 3alaikom Elsalam wa Rahmato Allah wa barakatoh
<MaherG> Lordveda: Leek wa7sha...
<Lordveda> MaherG: shokran ya akhi
<-- ShErbO has quit ("byeezz")
<MaherG> Lordveda: http://linux-egypt.org/showthread.php?t=3158 , tell me what do you think ?
<Lordveda> MaherG: I agree with Redhat that an LUG has more activities to be done than just a forum
<MaherG> Do you think LEPS could be a good start ?
<Lordveda> MaherG: I read your reply, remember that Linux work is done on spare time which could be sparse sometimes
<MaherG> maybe in summer ?
<Lordveda> I think that LEPS can be a good start especially for those who have programming intentions
<Lordveda> Summer doesn't mean always vacation
<Lordveda> :)
<MaherG> Lordveda: I know, but at least those who are in college will get more free time.
<MaherG> I was thinking actually, would it be a couple of projects or would it be a hands-on interactive course.
<MaherG> I'll show you some examples.
<MaherG> hold on

<Lordveda> I feel overloaded with so much web pages to read
<Lordveda> MaherG: give me summaries
<MaherG> ok
<Lordveda> MaherG: very short ones
<MaherG> I will give examples
<MaherG> helping each other to learn Python for example, we all refer to a book and upon a schedule every session we discuss the chapters we were supposed to read, if someone has some questions, others can reply, this probably needs a mentor here.
<MaherG> other type
<Lordveda> MaherG: that a good idea
<MaherG> is to have some type of project in our mind that we could start working on, but that would be a big project which will be broken into subprojects, then people will join whichever subprojects they choose to, then in each subproject there are some concepts that have to be learned before jumping into code. As for the language used in the subprojects that's unknown for now, but it could be left free for the individuals to choose.
<Lordveda> MaherG: agreeing about a common language and a common programming manner should be present
<MaherG> Lordveda: Well the language is not the issue now, if we can design how projects are to be chosen and joined in then the programming language to be used could be predefined in favour of the most suitable one.
<Lordveda> MaherG: I have to go for now
<Lordveda> MaherG: C you later ISA
<Lordveda> :)
<MaherG> Lordveda: Take care of studying.
<MaherG> Lordveda: Salam.
<Lordveda> MaherG: Salam

I would really like to know what are your opinions, could something like this work out smoothly ?

Maher .. A mentoring prgram will be a great idea. A mentors & mentees relation would be a good step in the LUG. With commitment from the mentoring and ability for mentees to request certain mentors.

MaherG
I think we can brainstorm most of the details of LEPS till our exams are finished. That'd be for the next 2 weeks ISA.

3omrak atwal men 3omry ya RedHat
I was just chatting with safrout about that yesterday.
I am thinking of establishing teams, to handle to the activities.
Events team, Marketing team (Yes, Linux marketing), Training team...etc

But the time now is not suitable to discuss it, as most of the members are students, and it is exams time now.
We can start brainstorming about it
