SERIALKILLER
Hi,My linux does not support my modem although a driver is avialable (motorola sm56) ,however this is not the problem
i want to know what modem does linux support and can be bought from alexandria so that i can buy one
(given that us robotics external isent avialable at all stores

SERIALKILLER
forgot to say ,i have got linux redhat 7.2 (from online mag)

safrout
as it seems that u can pay for an external one so any SERIAL external modem will work under linux ISA

Continuing to Safrout's post.

If you can't afford to buy an external Serial modem why don't you try to find the Rockwell (Conexant) internal PCI modem. Though this is a winmodem, it is recently becoming a linmodem too so go for it if you like to have a working modem with PCI architecture in your PC. Mind you that possibly with future kernels (2.6) you could be at risk if you want to run the modem in linux (software incompatibilities). If I were you I would go to buy an external modem (serial type).

Finally, Salam.

SERIALKILLER
thanks alot,i think am going to buy an external modem, but i heard that some external modems wont work with linux,is that right?
or any one will work?

safrout
any SERIAL external modem will work ISA
but any USB external modem won't work :)

so be sure that it is a serial

I think USB support is there in the kernel 2.4. It is risky to depend on this and spend money to buy a modem that might or might not work under Linux. I have an experience with the Hotsync cradle of my Palm handheld that used the USB interface. It worked and synced with linux. What I am saying that it is up to you man to take the decision and buy either an external serial or Usb or an Internal PCI modem.

safrout
yup kernel 2.4 have alot of usb devics suppoort but not one of them is for uusb external dial up modem

i have one and it refussing to work under linux :)
