There are many prog's in linux but most popular are :
1) mplayer http://www.mplayerhq.hu
it can open almost any thing -it can use .DLL(dummy link lib's) too-
RM ,QT, mpeg,and mp4 ... or any thing

2) xmms
it's for X multi media system
it's manly for audio(ogg mp3) but there is many plugin -some enable mpeg vedio-
it can use winamp skins
in redhat they remove the mp3
go to freshrpms.net and get xmms-mpg plugin as an rpm
for it
3) xine
its for vedio comes with many distro like mandy
but it on some card crashed (may be S3 )

to start the GUI one type

gmplayer -skin SkinName

i don't like Xine cos it always crashes and never play anything

XMMS is very good it can use win amp skins, it can play
video (mpeg , avi , flic..) with a small plugin
the xmms folder is
/usr/lib/xmms/
or /lusr/X11R6/lib/xmms
there are sub folders for skins and plugins
to add the plugin for mpeg download those two
files about 200K

right click some where goto prephrals then
goto the plugin you whant (smpeg plugin) then click configure

tip: use add file not add dir since in the add file dialog the is a button name add all in this folder
