View Full Version : Have you moved to Linux-2.6 yet?

OneOfOne
well i was just wondering, alot people said they wouldn't try 2.6 until it's stable so here we go.... been stable for awhile and 2.6.1 is almost out (2.6.1-rc2 just came out).
2.6 is much faster than 2.4, and using cfq (which is in the -mm tree) makes disk access much better for desktops.

so are you using it?
/me is running 2.6.1-rc1-mm2-love3

Yes man !!!

btw, regarding the use of beta software, we meant production systems should not use beta software, but for desktop PCs like ours, ya sure !

cheers,

I installed the new kernel and it did work but with many defeciancies. I found the following in the log file:

Jan17 6 :47: 29localhost mount: mount: fs type vfat not supported by kernel
Jan17 6 :47: 29localhost netfs: Mounting other filesystems: failed
Jan17 6 :47: 28localhost iptables: failed
Jan17 6 :47: 28localhost last message repeated 2 times

Also, the sound server device /dev/dsp did not start, the package installer did not work ( it started looking for packages and disappeared), the USB mouse did not work, I could not mount Windows file system, I could not install my Conexsant modem which is currently working with the2 .4.22- 8kernel. I read some documents in this site http://www.tldp.org./HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/os.html#OSKERNEL
but no useful info on upgrading the kernel. Do I have a currupted kernel 2. 6files? Did I make the wrong configuration in the make menuconfig step? Can you help me?

Thanks

Salam

well i can tell you forgot to add vfat modules to the kernel....
check them under file systems.
and the sound did you enable alsa modules for your card? (or oss but its not recommended anymore)
you sadly can't run conexant modems under 2.6 yet :-/
remember to enable pty fs support in file system to be able to use xterm/konsole/gnome-termnal.
