View Full Version : update the kernel
hanik
Al salam alaikum,
I have kernel version 2.4 and redhat 8, I am not able to mount NTFS partitions even when I update my fstab.
as I read that kernel 2.4.x supports ntfs so can you advice where to download it and how to compile it.
Best regard,
Hani
ErrorMsg
you need not to update you are using 2.4.x may be 2.4.20
but RH remove the ntfs since RH is anti M$ and US low's
---
so only you need to download ntfs module and install it

AFAIK, write support is still absent.

right from the kernel's help :
│ CONFIG_NTFS_RW: │
│ │
│ This enables the partial, but safe, write support in the NTFS driver. │
│ │
│ The only supported operation is overwriting existing files, without │
│ changing the file length. No file or directory creation, deletion or │
│ renaming is possible. Note only non-resident files can be written to │
│ so you may find that some very small files (<500 bytes or so) cannot │
│ be written to. │
│ │
│ While we cannot guarantee that it will not damage any data, we have │
│ so far not received a single report where the driver would have │
│ damaged someones data so we assume it is perfectly safe to use. │
│ │
│ Note: While write support is safe in this version (a rewrite from │
│ scratch of the NTFS support), it should be noted that the old NTFS │
│ write support, included in Linux 2.5.10 and before (since 1997), │
│ is not safe. │
│ │
│ This is currently useful with TopologiLinux. TopologiLinux is run │
│ on top of any DOS/Microsoft Windows system without partitioning your │
│ hard disk. Unlike other Linux distributions TopologiLinux does not │
│ need its own partition. For more information see │
│ <http://topologi-linux.sourceforge.net/> │
│ │
│ It is perfectly safe to say N here.

If you are not experienced with building a new kernel, you can just download the rpm files for RH here
http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/rpm/
This works read-only
ErrorMsg
he is talking about any support (like in just mount it)
----
RH users can't mount ntfs without an add-on rpm
or rebuilding the kernel module for that

ErrorMsg, what do you mean support ?
it just mounts like any other fs (ext2, ext3, FAT) with the suitable module available the fs can be automatically detected.
#mount /dev/hdan /mnt/ dir

Salamo 3alaikom,
NTFS read and write in now available in kernel 2.6. I advise to install a kernel 2.6 and work with it if you need and can work and compile it.
Salam.
