the best resource on winmodem is http://www.linmodems.org
check there and see if there is a driver to your modem.
however I still recommend that you buy an external serial modem, these are standard devices that don't even need a driver (and their performance is usually better than software modems).

For those beginners in Linux, I think this web page is an excellent resource for knowing if your modem will work within LInux or Not. I had to dig within www.linmodems.org (not so deep though) in order to reach this web page. This web page is a good one for linmodems. It is as follows:
http:http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html
As for how to reach more information about your modem, in Windows it can be reached via 2 places:
Control Panel/Modems Phones and Modems in XP)/Check your modem in the dialog box that appears and click the Diagnostics/Query modem. (Don't do it when you are online, the modem simply won't respond :))
Control Panel/system/Modem/Properties/Diagnostics/query modem. The method differs however with each Windows version. However all versions nearly look alike.
