Winmodems
Winmodems are not real modems, they depend on the CPU and the operating system to do what the modem hardware is supposed to do. Hence, it needs special drivers. Most winmodems in Egypt suffer that their manufacturers didn't release drivers for Linux operating system. With the exception to conexant modems (which are sold under different brand names in Egypt), there is a non-free modem driver developed by Linuxant www.linuxant.com Linuxant used to release the drivers without a fee (free of charge) until recently when they suddenly have changed their license, and offered a free version of their drivers, but limited to 14.4 kbps only, which is not usable these days. If you still use a modem of that kind, and using a distribution based on 2.4.x kernels, you can still download the latest freely released version of the driver from http://www.int21.de/conexant/ Again, we remind that this version is free of charge, but is not released under a Free/Open License.
