The Mandriva developers have released the first (and probably final) release candidate of Mandriva Linux 2006: "Mandriva Linux 2006 RC1 is here!"

The long release notes provide all the details, including information about fixes to printing, authentication, boot loader, look and feel, networking and the usual RPM package updates and rebuilds.

A total of 283 bugs have been fixed and over 14,000 packages rebuilt. The above page also carries a list of up-to-date mirrors.

Mandriva Linux 2006 was released to Club members, and the tree will be publicly available on October 13.
New features include the Kat Desktop Search Environment, an interactive firewall, and enhanced wifi support with Mandriva being the only Linux distribution certified for Centrino hardware.

The integration of technology from Conectiva and Lycoris has led to improved installation (in 40+ languages), better package management, and quicker boot time."

Few weeks after the formal release of Mandriva Linux 2006 to members of the Mandriva Club, the CD and DVD images of the "Free" edition (i.e. containing Free Software only) are now available for free download.
