hi guys. its been a long time since i got on this place and send message. i have been so busy with my studies, u know that electronics and communications is hard and needs work. anyways, i just got a usb modem and want to know if it work with me or not.
The site of Apache says they dont support linux. which is usual
i searched here and in linux4arab and other sites but didnt find a direct answer for my specific case which is
Can my modem Apache V92-SP usb work on linux red hat 7.2
i have mandrake 8.1 also so if it will work i can use it
if it can how?
is there a driver for the modem?
do i need to get another kernel:( and compile it like i tried with the other connexant modem i have and got 20 error msgs?
Please help me cause i really want to learn more and more about linux and i am not happy to send these msgs from Mswindows. its shame to do so in my point of view.

Hope to get the answer from u as fast as u can..

You Apache(tm) modem is based on the Connexant controlerless modem HCFi. So you either return that modem if you can and buy an EXTERNAL serial modem, or return it and buy an INTERNAL Connexant modem (HSF).
I am deeply sorry but the HCF external is NOT supported :-(
My information might be outdated, you would better check this site

hi safroot, how u doing? thank you for ur answer. i have had a small hope that i could get linux to work with this modem. i have another connexant but i lost hope to get it to work.
seems like there is no solution but buying a serial modem. i was willing to get one but i wanted to get more experience with linux first. thank god the usb modem isnt mine and i borrowed it from a friend of mine.
i want to know what models of serial modem are there and how much they cost, also want to make sure that they work well with other os like windows 98, Me , XP.
there is one last thing. i noticed that when i open a program that looks for hardware information, i dont remember the name but i remember that i saw " V90 USB modem" there, but the deltails showed there was no details and that there is no driver installed. How come that the kernel doesnt support the modem and it can reconize its presence. i dont mean ur liar or something lassamaha allah, but this is surprising.
if u can help me with all of this, i will appreciate it.
Thank u Mr safroot.
Note: does the lastest version of linux ( redhat 9? ) support USB?
Thank u alot...

Salamo 3alaikom,
To Ahmed, Ya sayed Ahmed there is a big difference between reading hardware information and making hardware functioning. Even in Windows this is applicable too. The OS can identify that a certain hardware could include a certain range of memory but it can't make it work unless the proper software that could make it work is present and works. Two or three days ago, I saw a USR external modem, I am not sure however if it is a serial modem. I saw it in Elmohandessin in Souk elcomputer elli gamb Atlas hotel (Share3 Gameat eldowal). The external modem would function for all OS in Shaa Allah. By the way, if you do a little more search for the word conexant on this forum you will find some posts related to the conexant modem on this forum. This issue was exhausted by questions and answers, Please do a little work and try to find those posts yourself. In Linux, you must stop and decrease to a minimal amount the mouth feeding attitude gained by the long use of MS Windows.
Finally, I didn't mean any offense with post.
Salam.

hi every one, i think i was missandaztood. the problem with me isnt with connexant modem. i had enough with it and i dont want to use it with linux anymore unless i become more experienced with it. the problem that all the evidences say that the USB modem cannot work on linux. i wanted to make sure that none has a solution before i quit this and search for another one. i already got a USB mouse and i am from alexandria. i knew the address anyway. the information i need now is just an advice for a good not very expensive modem that will work easily with linux propably seems it is a serial modem. need to know the price range too. the only resitriction is that it works with other operating systems like Me and XP. i am very new to linux, i mean i use it since long but not for long time. the main reason is that i depend on the net alot in my studies so without net, i still need windows which kills me...
i had enough installing and reinstalling windows 3-12 times a month. thank you all...
Ahmed...

any external serial modem will work ISA on any system Linux or windoz as Mr. Habdin said
as for the prices the cheapest one i think was Acrop it coss about 260 but u can hardly find it now next is creative costs about 270 and u can find it but have to serach a little
next is D-link which i have :) costs 290 next is 3COM ( us robotics) costs about 350
those prices is based on date 3/4/03
and about ur rockwell inetrnal modem it is very easy to install it
just be sure that u have the kernel source installed ( u can install it using Kpackage or Install programe ) & gcc i think
then just compile ur modem
./configure
make
make install
hsfconfig
sure u have to be root during installing

Salamo 3alaikom,
I really hope that the post Mohamed made is not true. It has to be checked out though. I had a successful setup of Conexant on RH 8.0 didn't check it on RH 9.
Well I think it really deserves a trial to see whether it works or not.

It was working on Psyche, but not with Shrike.
At least this was my experience.
I hope to know that it is working.

Salamo 3alaikom,
Mr. Redhat, It is good to see such a resourcable person like yourself among us in linux-egypt. You are a real treasure for us. We will gain much knowledge from your presence. I would like to let you know that few of our users in here do know the uses of the utility called lspci and much fewer will know the use of the /proc filesystem for knowing much of the hardware of their machines. I would like you to know that many of our users here don't search the forum before asking their questions. This drives many of the knowledable persons crazy. If you tell them to search in the forum or in Google, hell you made a crime and you might be called impolite. Dear Sir, I have posted the site you have already mentioned many times (or may be once) in the forum but in vain (though I didn't mention the usb part of it). Always the questions are repeated to the extent that we really get bored of this repetition. I hope that your patience will exceed ours by a vast distance. Thanks again for joining our little forum. Wait for much questions about my problems in RH. ;)
Salam.

thanks for the warning :)
I still have good energy to better help, and actually will love to help in anyway I can specially Egyptian forum.
I do visite some other arabic forum but never posted anything.
Although I know about Linux-Egypt, but I never had chance to act in postive way because of busy life :)
Today one of my friends asked me to have a look, and I told that friend I know about it, and here you found myself happy to post and try to help an Egyptian linux community specially because it is Egyptian.

Out of topic,
I really have to greet you for your spirit Mr. Sherif. I would really like you to have the same spirit a few month ahead. Oh by the way, why do you have different signatures in posts?
