View Full Version : Adjusting my monitor

Assalam Alikum,
I am havig trouble with my NEW Mandrake9.2 (thanks to Uniball; Getting it, not having the trouble! Hahaha)
Well, I always have my monitor not working in the full mode, I mean it has black margins around the screen. Something like the screen of windows when in safe mode.
How may I deal with this?
I use a viewsonic screen, model E40
I have an S3 card, which I think is 16 MB(not sure)
I have configured it to work with 800*600 and 4 billion colors (wow!!!)

Wa 3alaycom assalam,
Is the monitor probed correctly by your system?
run Xconfigurator and see what type of monitor your system see, if it is the same type/model of your monitor, then the problem should be with other X configuration, if not, then search for it in the monitors list, if not found, then you have to use the generic driver with horizantel/vertical sync of your monitor "see vendor information" .

first of all if you're going to change monitor type you'd better use Mandrake's tools, ie run XFdrake.
best policy to properly configure monitor margins is to configure it on the console first.
-switch to console and open a full screen program like mc
-use monitor buttons to set up margins (screen width and height) the way you like them
when this is over start X, or switch back to X
no if under X the thing doesn't look right then this is a modeline problem.
open xvidtune
you'll find two sets of buttons, one has left, right, wider, narrower.
the other has up, down, shorter, taller.
they work exactly like monitor buttons, so if you have big margins on the left and right you need to make the screen wider etc.
note that one click has a very small effect you'll need to click alot, note also that it works in some quantum fashion so sometimes one click might jump a long way.
note also that clicks don't have an effect until you click the test or apply buttons, you can click auto to make changes have immediate effects.
finaly when you find the correct setting click on show, xvidtune will print a modeline on the terminal you used to run it (did I mention you need to run it from a terminal).
the modeline looks like this
"1280x1024" 135.00 1280 1296 1440 1676 1024 1025 1028 1066 +hsync +vsync
now paste this line in your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file in the monitor section right after the VertRefresh line, and add the keyword ModeLine to the begining of the line.
ie it should look like this
......#stuff
Section "Monitor"
......#stuff
VertRefresh 50-160
ModeLine "1280x1024" 135.00 1280 1296 1440 1676 1024 1025 1028 1066 +hsync +vsync
.....#stuff
EndSection
........#stuff
you should make sure you got the correct monitor settings first though.
cheers,
Alaa
