View Full Version : Welcom Fedora

hi,
Its my first post here, but actually I am old Red hat linux user...
I was very sad to know that Red Hat will stop delivering its Boxed set..
and serves only the Enterprise...
OK ...I have switched to Fedora
first tried Mandrake 9.0 and 9.1
its terrible...i can not even format
a floppy....!!!..
Installing Fedora..the Installation process went well and the system bootup is good enough...
There is a problem with the Package management tool "redhat-config-packages"
and also the kernel sources can not be recompiled ..to fine tune the kernel
So, i removed Fedora Kernel Sources
and Installed a prestine one from a tarball. It is Ver (2.4.22)
Installing it and Recompile ..everything went well..
Then after rebooting the new kernel
I installed the Nvidia driver
and conexant Modem Driver, and
Pinnacle DC10+ driver
Till Now everything seems good..
only one problem with the daemon gpm
during its shutting down..sometimes
it is cleanly shutting down
and another time it fail
till now i do not know why ???
Have anyone see this problem..
Thanks
khaledma

First of all welcome to FC1
Now the problems u ve with MDK r strange to happen since MDK is known to be the most user-friendly distro ever. I would like to know what happened with u and the errors reported.
Back to FC1
- Fedora Kernel compiles very well with no problems. List what u did and the error messages u got.
- For the gpm problem
does it happen with FC kernel or ur compiled kernel?
whats ur mouse type? and the output of ps -efw|grep gpmwas this happening with any old ver of RHL?
Also I need to know ur hardware configuration and specs specially the mobo brand and model
- For the redhat-config-packages problem u didnt specify whats the problem

Now come on, how come a full-featured distro that is the most popular among desktops not support formatting floppies ?
You're probably having problems with the distro, but it is one of the best...

...oh, and forgot to tell ya
you're free to use try whatever distros you want, it's an advantage of the GNU/Linux world.
word of advice though... don't freak away everytime you face a problem and run for a different distro!
you'd be better off facing your problems than running away from them.
ofcourse I'm not accusing you of doin' that, It's merely an advice because I used to do that alot..
Wishing you Best of Luck :)

Hello sattia,
It seems that u are a nice guy..
First of all i want to tell u that i am using linux, nearly from
6 years ago, ..starting from Red Hat 5.0
5.1..5.2...6.0..6.1...6.2...7.0..7.1..7.2..7.3..8.0
I have worked hardly through..all these versions from Red Hat..
all of them were official Boxes.
The problem starts when trying to use the free download copy
for Red Hat 9.0 .., or for Mandrake..
I am not a linux hoppiest, I am serious from the beginning.
That is why i have used official packages.
About My hard ware:
MoBo: MSI 845EV
CPU: Intel P4, 2.4 GHz
MEM: 512 ,PC 2100
Modem: Conexant 56k, PCI
Sound: Creative vibra 128 , live.
Firewire: IEEE 1394, OHCI , FW323
VGA: Nvidia , Geforce 2 MX 200 , AGP
Video Capture: Pinnacle DC10+, (zoran) PCI
NET: 3com 10/100 MB/s
As u see its 100% linux compatible HW, actually its perfect.
with red hat 8.0 evrything is OK on the same HW.
With respect to Fedora,
I guess i have CD problems....
can u please tell me from where to get a good copy for Fedora
and for mandrake 9.1 ? as soon as possible
thanks
khaled
safrout
why mandrake 9.1
go for 9.2 since it is out
and from u can get them--> check the dist. list on the mai page of the site

Salamo 3alaikom,
I don't see any reason for you to be upset that Redhat Linux has become a project rather than a product. Being a project adds many powers to the actual distro. Well the actual filesystem in Fedora remains the same as many Redhat Linux filesystem organization, so no need to panic about that topic.
I agree with you about that feeling about MDK by the way. I didn't like its style with Linux at all though being the easiest to use. If you need to stick to a dsitribution that has official support then stick to MDK and forget about the likes and dislikes. Anyway who cares about official support in Linux? Remember Eazel and Nautilus?
What is wrong exactly with the Redhat package manager? Do you need it to list all installed packages on your system even if they are not official Redhat ones? On Fedora you can have that without using the package manager though I agree with you that it should be in the package manager. You can view the System Logs utility. It has an entry that lists all rpm packages installed on your system. With a little digging within the system I found out that this log is a simple script that prints out the rpm list installed and that script is run on daily basis.
About the gpm problem can you be more specific?
Salam.

no flame, does fedora support reiserfs/xfs/jfs by default?
if not then i have no idea how is it a popular distro..
peace
ErrorMsg
MDK can't format? HMMM
1) cuz the super mount see the autofs www.koolpages.com/jornix/ar/hw.html
2) cuz it's mounted because if you are seeing /mnt/floppy
then it's mounted in mandy in RH it's only mounted if you ask for it by mount
--
gpm is general perpos mounse driver it's for consol not for X
so it may fail if you give the bad config like having ps/2 and config to use serial ms mouse
also it' may fail if you stop the service of gpm then you shutdown
so it try to stop it again so fail

First, FSes r not the means to measure the popularity of a distro. A distro is called popular if and only if more ppl do use it or hear about it.
Second, yes all of these r supported officially by RedHat except the XFS which has a lot of other stuff available to add support to RHL ranging from complete installers based on the RHL anaconda installer to some rpms of the kernel with XFS support added.
Third, on servers and when it comes to stability and risk of data loss; nothing other than ext2/3 proved stable.
Fourth, how do u define a distro being popular?
khaledma
