View Full Version : GeForce2 mx400 running as SiS!!

arius32
i just bought a GeForce 2 mx400 64 Mb for 200 LE, the maker is "Beststar"
im trying to install it on Slackware 9.0 upgraded to 9.1 with Dropline Gnome,
downloaded latest nVidia driver, did all combinations of command line stunts i could think of, and i cant get the module to load, and it gives me an error about kernel headers being mismatched, so i view the log file and the broblem is that init_device or something is NO Such device!!!. i do this a million times, remove kernel headers a couple of times, rebuild kernel and clean up rebuild, and try to no avail, still the same error , so i try lspci and i get:

it's runnign fine as a SiS card with no 3D accelartion, but i bougth for the 3D accelration, so any one has ideas on how to get this to work?
or atleast if you have another GeForce2 mx400 lspci it and tell me what the output is??

Offffffff
You were tricked man. You bought it as nVidea but it's not
My soulmate - a few of you know him - bought one and was tricked also. You have 2 solutions:
1) run it using the SiS driver "because it's actually SiS"
or
2) return it to the place where you got it from.

arius32
tab just in case i cant return it, is there any way to get the 3D accelartion working on linux??
i dont really care if it was anything as long as i can get the 3D acceleration working.
guy's im an architect for crying out loud!!!
grrrrrrrr

I really don't know.
My experience with SiS drivers was with my 5597/5598 chip.
* make sure that xvideo is enables:
$ xvinfo
you should get something similar to:
X-Video Extension version 2.2
screen #0
Adaptor #0: "Intel(R) 830M/845G/852GM/855GM/865G Video Overlay"
number of ports: 1
port base: 60

with many lines.
* for the 3D, It took me 5 days to figure the whole stuff on Debian "because there were no driver in the stock kernel", while mandrake did it in 1 min. !!!
What's your distro ?

I don't think that your card is supported by DRI, No 3D "I'm not sure"

All SiS related stuff are here:

alaa
run lspci to find out what your SIS chip is.
then search the web for its Linux driver.
however I strongly recommend that you take it back to the shop, most probably they have been tricked too and don't know about it.

there is a whole stock of nvidia cards in the market that are actualy sis cards.

the funny thing is the sis card included has nearly the same price as the nvidia card (according to froogle)???

cheers,
Alaa

I'm heading off to the shop in a couple of houres, and i hope good ol' Egyptian tanna7a does't get in the way!

btw: could anyone explain to me why an ancient Diamond speedstar A50 8Mb, SiS 86C5598 326/6326 runs faster, smoother gradiants and 3D (Mesa) , than a 32Mb S3 Savage4 or my socalled 64Mb nVidia geforce2 mx400 (with the SiS 315 PRO chip) ???

anna mesh baharrag walla bastahbel, the aincient thing is way faster, on linux and very close to the rest on windows *
