hmm i do..
i tried redhat and hated rpm, so basicly i hate all rpm based distros.
i tried apt-get for rpm which i kinda liked but it's no way near portage in quality imho, so i droped apt-get based distros..
slackware's package manager whatever it is called is known to be the worst ever.
lfs is as fast as gentoo except its pain to update it.

I'm grabbing it. ;)
you tried apt4rpm but you didn't try the original APT
APT good, but with the other helper tools it really rox
You didn't try Mandrake urpmi too.
OneOfOne
apt4rpm is pretty much the same as original apt.
i tried urpmi once if i recall right in mndk8.2, nothing special about it except handling the deps.
let's not turn it into another distro war, i'm just a gentoo believer!

Salamo 3alaikom,
Before you like or dislike rpm itself ya akh OneofOne, I suggest you read Maximum-rpm and know the powers of rpm. You can with a simple special text file called .spec for a package make miracles. Even you pass your cflags and cxxflags in the same file or to rpm-build. And still you can control dependencies. Automatic control of dependencies is a two way weapon. It is not a total good thing. You have liked portage because with a single file (I got that from your talks I might be wrong) to ebuild. I guess you got into the powers of portage and liked it because you simply have read many documentations concerning it. Why don't you do the same for rpm? Be open-minded as you say ya OneofOne.

i know about .spec....i just think it's too much trouble...
habdin i know your all crazy about rpm as much as uniball is crazy about apt-get and as much as systems is crazy about debian, i'm just the same about gentoo :)

Salamo 3alaikom,
This is the free world of linux where we all can do whatever we like with our OS and to our OS.

No, apt4rpm is crap !
what about
apt-file
apt-cache
apt-move
apt-listchanges
apt-config
apt-show-versions
apt-sortpkgs
apt-ftparchive
apt-extracttemplates
...
all the sprcfile things can be done in the debian/ subdir of the package.
alaa
don't forget apt-bugreport
alaa
BTW the power of debian package management has nothing to do with the deb format its all about the tools.
RPM has all the features of DEB and maybe even more, the problem is they never wrote any proper tools for it.
I mean look at how many years it took anyone to do automatic dependency resolution (apt-rpm and urpmi).
RedHat are even worse they only caught up to this last year and it only worked with one package repositry.
IMO if urpmi get more tools it can beat apt based tools, the only major part that is missing is an apt-config like system and an easy way to extend the system (ie scripting API).
however right now urpmi has some great feature that AFAIK is not in apt,
- gpg signature checking of packages
- MD5 checksum checking when updating repositry databases
- Rsync support
- Good and useable GUI (check synaptic & gnome-apt to see what I mean)
cheers,
Alaa

NewComer
This thread has gone out of topic ages ago.
What about talking about Gnome 2.4?
Anybody tried it?
Any reviews from a linux-egypt user?
OneOfOne
i agree with NewComer.

Salamo 3alaikom,
I have download the beta version of Gnome 2.4. It is still cool. It has many additions. I can't list them. There are Gnome 2.4 reviews on www.osnews.com. Go ahead and read them. I noticed it is fast. I have compiled it on lfs and it was fast.

well i know this is bit too late but thought i'd share..
(i actually installed it 2-3 weeks ago).
compiling went ok, i think only had a problem with libesd or something that didnt like gcc-3.3.1 but a simple patch fixed it.
nothing spiecal about gnome2.4 imo, yeah it's fast and nautuils is noticibly fast but the fact that to modify very basic settings need to run gconf is just sad...
(ex: try to set a panel's width to 40px)
so i just went back to kde.
although i haven't unmerged gnome yet, but it'll always be just a backup DE/WM for me, along side fvwm, fluxbox and pekwm.
peace
