It seems that I could open the options of any program once only. Opening it again makes it close immediately as it pops up. I tried searching the net, but I found real difficulties in getting the right search parameters. BTW, this bug happens most of the time.

what version of kde/glibc/distro?

try to upgrade kde.
i've never had that bug neither on redhat9 with kde-3.1.1 nor on gentoo both kde-3.1.2 and kde3.1.3.

May be you can trace the program that crashes by running it from a terminal and paste in here the error message you get. Would this help?
