what'd i say?
it's old news and been already in portage?
well it's true but i actually like the gimp and i'm glad about this release:)

Salamo 3alaikom,
I can assume why anyone could crave for new releases. The new features that are present in new releases omit the need for old releases. Gimp 2.0 has many features the most important of which is the ability to write in many languages (Text tools) and the ability to deal with SVG.
I think soon enough GIMP will supercede Photoshop.

Are we a software announcements forum ?

Pinnacle PCTV Deluxe/Bungee Console version 1.3 was released today
I guess I made my point.
the guidelines have to remain minimal but this doesn't mean that anything that fits the guidlines is good, remember when we had hundreds of riddles??
so yes new software releases can be discussed, sure its interesting, but too much of anything can be bad.
IMO just anouncing software releases doesn't make sense, if you're going to add valuable info that isn't easlity found on freshmeat, or add your opinon on the release or generaly say anything that might spawn an interesting discussion then its a good thing.
for example OneOfOne sent us a screenshot of his new KDE desktop (well it looked like the old one, but I'm being pedantic), this could lead to dicussion.
but the whole Kernel version blah blah was relased who is using it period thing is frankly anoying.
I suppose releases very specific to our community or major to our community can get a notice.
for instance major distro releases, or software releases that add arabic support (like openoffice 1.1), or arabeyes releases, or software made by Linux-Egypt members etc.
cheers,
Alaa

The kernel ? The Gimp ? Why not post release announcements on them. They are not unusual to announce.
Anyway everyone is entitled to his own opinion.
Maher

no only senior members are entitled to their own opinion, junior members have to borrow them.
as for you....
seriously I still think its only welcome if it'll lead to a discussion (flamewars included), or if it adds very valuable infor not available elsewhere.
afterall we are not trying to replace freshmeat here.
however, if the members would like to have a mini frshmeat like service because they're too lazy to check freshmeat or because freshmeat moves too fast we can hack up an rss agregator that monitors latest releases of a certain set of packages and anounce them on the homepage.
we can also make the script sayb that it was already in gentoo before the developers got to make it, and report that OneofOne is already using it since he was in kindergarten.
oh and president blah blah visited king blah blah to tell him happy birthday.
cheers,
Alaa

Junior members ? Are you making fun of people here? It's just like calling some people as newbies which could and probably will hurt them.
Besides, differentiating between people in the community according to their duration of stay is totally wrong.
AFAIK and will know, there are no seniors in here.
About the posts:
There are major releases that sometimes and in the case of the Kernel, require a post to discuss certain errors that happen to occur.
No one is playing freshmeat here, no one has the time to try doing it.

One more thing, this very post could be a start of a discussion over GIMP+SVG, until Uniball crashed it with his question which I would like to answer,
For popular software ( real popular) then yes and it's also a GNU/Linux support forum.
Maher
alaa
ya ragel, you took the junior members thing seriously.
tab honsetly, I said they should borrow opinions, how could you take that seriously.
man attaching a disclaimer to my joks is no fun.
BTW I did not mean to say that this particular software anouncement is out of place.
I just wanted to demonstrate how this could get out of hand (ie that there is a point in what uniball is saying even if it doesn't fit this thread), and to chip in with my opinion about how we should think about the whole thing.
for instance this release of the Gimp adds arabic support (which was only hinted at but not explicitly stated in the) which qualifies according to my suggestions.
also note that the real info was added after the anounecment, the anouncement itself was nt informative, we have a few threads that start like this and don't move to the informative phase at all.
and in the end its all iin my not so humble opinion, which I am entitled to being an ultra super gorilla hahahahahahahahaha unlike you mwahahahaha

I'd like to announce that the above bug was resolved.

This bug should be of interrest as the problem was that there is no way to set
the default encoding that firebird use, Imagine yourself browsing Arabic sites,
And as you know most of them don't bother setting the encoding tag, So you can
simply enforce the use of the windows (Grr) 1256 encoding (YUK!) and browse as
you want.
cheerz,
uniball
Now imagine yourself when you wake up in the morning just to find ppl posting
software announcements here ? what's the importance of a kernel patch ? What's
the importance of the gimp 2.0pre? They released a bunch of development
versions before and we all know that it should support arabic ? This release
doesn't contain any additional features regarding the Arabic support since it
has been there in the development versions long ago ?
Maybe the gimp 2.0 itself really deserve an announcement, But announcing a
prerelease containing a feature present long ago is IMHO pointless!
A new kernel release adding valuable feature, fixing a major or long lasting
problem, containing security enhancements, ... should be announced.
Imagine if I am following the kernel CVS an announcing every commit here ?
Why don't you subscribe to freshmeat and get new releases by mail ? Why don't
you use RSS to get info. about new releases ?
I'm subscribed to many projects to get notifications about new
releases, would you like to see me posting new versions of
them because I *think* that they are important ?
Say yes and I can do it and I swear that I can doit, But before saying yes
imagine what it'd be like.
> One more thing, this very post could be a start of a discussion over

Do you think that this was really going to happen ?
How many announcements were there with no discussion ?
I crashed the thread ? Sure not, why didn't you simply ignore my post and
continue your *theoretical* discussion ?
hey, GIMP can export to SVG
WoW, great.
Is this a discussion ??
but I'm sure that this is what you'll get:
<person1> Hey version x.y.z of foo was released.
<person2> Get a life, That's old and I'm using it 9 minutes and 53 seconds before you and it ownz and rullez all the other software.
Oh my, instead of coding something usefull i had to read and reply to this
nonsence.

Salamo 3alaikom,
Kol dah 3ala Gimp. I guess I made a mess.

Mesh 3eab ? Were you raised to do something like that ? Is this what your parents taught you ? I *hope* not.

Salamo 3alaikom,
When I have initiated this thread I simply thought of it to tell about Gimp 2. Gimp is used by many users isn't it? I guess those little announcements about other softwares in the thread are for software that are not frequently used by many people. I just tried to focus on important software to many.

What's the relation between what i said and what you wrote ?
My parents tought me what your parents tought you. The difference that you are forgetting fast.

Next time, when you find any (so claimed) nonsense on the forum, don't reply to it, go continue coding.
Besides, Im not taking anything on my nerves.
My parents tought me what your parents tought you. The difference that you are forgetting fast.
What ? Is this some kind of insult or what ? Please clarify.

hmmm, You insult me and don't expect me to reply ? No. Never.

pretty obvious ;-)

that's equal to the meaning you obtain from:
"Is this what your parents taught you ? I *hope* not."
