i think this kind of modem is a winmodem ( which won't work under linux unless u find a driver for it)
but as another try why don't u tru installing mandrake 9.0 cos u know newer version is better in supporting hardware

I "think" most, if not all, internal PCI MODEMs on laptops are winmodems, thus what I did is that I ordered my laptop without a MODEM, instead I asked for a PCMCIA Xircom 56K MODEM + 10/100 NIC which works properly under RH and Mandy (except 9.0) which I really don't know why!. Anyhow, if your MODEM did NOT work, you might have the only solution of buying a PCMCIA (or else called PC card) MODEM.:D
I have no clue how much would they cost where you are located. sorry!.

Alsalamo 3laikom ya akh,
I would tell you about a thing I did with my notebook which includes a Serial port by the way. I attached the External modem of mine to it and got connected with it to the Internet. That was a good idea from me. I thinking those Notebooks with no Serial ports would not benefit from such a solution and you should try the solution Liquid suggested.
Finally, Salam.

WOW, that's a cool idea!
I'll try it :D

i have some good news
this ess chip in hp notebook seems to work with a driver
this driver and instructions to install it are here

and here

this should also work with creative modem blaster pci v.90(di5655) with the same chip
