View Full Version : What is wrong with mozilla?
ali_m
Salamo Alaikum
Hi every body there,
I tried to use mozilla as a browser, I made all the setup is it shoyld be. When i log on with the internet and launch mozilla, it does not go any where, i typed the name for a site example ( linux-egypt.com ) and the browser said " www.linux-egypt.com could not be found. please check the name and try again".
What do you think the problem is?
habdin
Salamo 3alaikom,
This is a missing Domain Name Server configuration ya akhi. You should edit /etc/resolv.conf. Remember that editing a file outside your home directory needs a root privileges. You should be root and use an editor to edit the file (editors include: Gedit, kedit,....etc.). You should the nameserver tilte before each entry.

i know that you are a mand. user so may be there are some configuration before you could using this browser or even before you could browse the net but if there is no any of this....
i think the browser search in proxy or DNS or something like that
so try to use another browser. if the problem still try to stop the service network if you have no servers are running and you have to know that is not a good solution actually it is not a solution at all but it just for test
waiting for your reply
i repeat again that is not solution at allllllllllllll but you didn't post an enough information

screwed up /etc/resolv.conf or /etc/hosts most likely.
can you ping an ip?

Salamo 3alaikom,
If you know some networking basics ya ali_m, you would have known from the first moment that it is a defect in the DNS. I have posted a long thread for how to make things work with names. Search my posts for DNS.

also make sure /etc/resolv.conf is readable by your user.
chmod 644 /etc/resolv.conf

Salamo 3alaikom,
By default /etc/resolv.conf get this mode ya OneofOne so he shouldn't bother himself with that setting. Input the correct nameservers there ya akhi. Hope you the Best of Luck ISA.

i think that ali has just installed his system and he didn't any configuration yet
so why he should edit /etc/resolve.conf while by default the kppp configure it during dial process (2ela 2eza kan feh DNS server) and i don't think so

Salamo 3alaikom,
First it is /etc/resolv.conf not /etc/resolve.conf this is of utmost importance in Linux. Second, why do you assume that he is using Kppp? He might have not setup Kppp properly for DNS. The actual benefit of using /etc/resolv.conf is its global effect on the whole system. Capito?

>First it is /etc/resolv.conf not /etc/resolve.conf
sorry its just typing error
about kppp i'm not assume that he is using it, but i said that as with kppp no need to configure /etc/resolv.conf while others like wvdial need to assign the ISP in the search
and in both cases the browser will not fail in search
unless he has a DNS server and only in this case when he using kppp or other he should configure /etc/resolv.conf for the two searchs
but he has no DNS server
i want you to know that i'm sure that his problem is in the resolv.conf but just i want to imagine the whole situation

Salamo 3alaikom,
The question is what if he does setup a nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf would that affect Kppp or not. I think it wouldn't. Please correct me if I am wrong (networking gurus).

if he use a nameserver in the resolv.conf the kppp out of topic but insteed it would affect the browser in search because www.linux-egypt.org is not in that nameserver (thats what happend to me when i was running named and DNS on my machine where the search was on that nameserver only in the resolv.conf)
so i think only if there is a DNS server is running he must edit the resolv.conf
by another way the question is if i have a DNS server running on my machine and i want to browse the net what shall i do
by the way that man (ali) has no DNS server

Dear brothers,
Thank you for your quick response and being eager to help.
After checking the resolv.conf, i found the nameserver and DNS as i entered in the setup.
This time i am using konqueror browser and both of them have the same setup.
Why can i use one brwser while can't use the other?
habdin
Salamo 3alaikom,
ali_m: Try to ping any site in a terminal. If you can ping it then the DNS will be setup properly for you. Can you do this on any terminal?

habdin:
i think you understand me now Dr.habdin (the man has DNS server during installaiton and thats what i wouldn't expect at all)
but thats supports what i said about he will need to edit the resolv.conf only if he has a DNS server on his machine and at the same time he want to browse the net
>Why can i use one brwser while can't use the other?
ali:
i told you to use another browser in my first post and you did but now please tell us exactly which one is working and is this after editing any thing in the resolv.conf

Habdin, i did ping google.com and this what i got
(ali@localhost ali]$ ping google.com
PING google.com
(216.239.37.99) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 216.239.37.99: icmp_seq=1 ttl=50 time=628 ms)
it is a very long list.
Elhoseeny, I used konqueror browser which work fine before editing the resolv.conf, i did not edit resolv.conf
habdin
Salamo 3alaikom,
If your ping works then ur problem is not a DNS problem. It could be another thing. Did you change anything in /etc/resolv.conf or not?

right
>I used konqueror browser which work fine before editing the resolv.conf, i did not edit resolv.conf
so your problem is in modzi.. check if there is a gateway with it or proxy server modzilla looking at
oh...did you stoped network service and try again with kppp
please do that for me if you have no problem with that as i told you before

OK guys.
I fixed the problem, it was in proxy setup, i removed the word "http://" and every thing works fine. I like this browser, it looks good and faster than the one used before.

good luck ;) ;) ;)

Salamo 3alaikom,
Bottom line: Browsers could not work for 1- DNS not assigned 2- Proxies not assignd (if present). Perhaps there are other causes. I think we should summarize things in order to know what to do in similar situations.

Dear brothers
Thank you again for the guidance you gave toword solving the problem i met.

Salamo 3alaikom,
