0.6.1 is great. Losers, like me, who still use i586 hardware can download GTK2 + XFT builds for mandrake 9.x from texstar. (or mandrake cooker contrib, it worked ok)

Others who enjoy hardware that can run i686 stuff, don't bother with 0.6.1. Go directly and download a nightly build. Now there are official nighlties with gtk2+XFT enabled.

The versions after 0.6.1 have got lots of changes (in the usability) that simply makes things harder for Internet Explorer developers.

The downside of latest builds is the fact that it uses different skins. It can't use old skins version 1.2. However, this will change in the near future.

Go Firebird go !

Nobody can argue with the fact that Mozilla Firebird 0.6 is GREAT. But I just can' t see anything worth it to download and use 0.6.1. The most annoying bug is still there - setting default encoding-.I've downoaded it but I'm certainly not going to use it. This release is a minor bug fix and they even messed up with the forward, backward and history buttons which I liked. They look awfull now. I just advice u not to waste ur time in a 9.2 MB download and then installation. Its not worth it and 0.6 is just doing great.

FireBird is a 10MB download and takes 28 MB uncompressed.
when will we have a decent Free browser that is doesn't take more than 10MB and doesn't need 100+ MB of RAM??

would be nice too if it was bit responsive.

cheers,
Alaa

Well alaa, you're right but until then Firebrid is our only hope. I mean , one can't just use a text browser all the time.

alaa
the way I see it there are only two real alternatives each with its set of problems.

Links-Graphics, thats originaly a textonly browser with now an X, SVGA and FramBuffer interface, it renders stuff beatifully even better than mozilla but it lacks cut and paste, proper CSS support and it has very poor javascript support. combine this with no arabic support and it ends up being retty useless.

the other choice is Opera, it lean it supports nearly all web standards but unfortunatly it isn't Free Software and it doesn't support arabic yet.

hey, wait! Firebird as webbrowser is probably nothing more than 1 or 2 megabytes. All this size comes from the "Gecko Runtime Enviroment". GRE is what makes Mozilla very intresting.

Plus, the world wide web is a jungle of codes. Mostly optimized to look good on IE, without following any standards. Put in mind that mozilla firebird now, is way faster than firebird 9 months ago.
IMNSHO, Firebird is revoltionary. I am browsing the web not for its content, but for the ride. Its like a Ferrari.

Well, on my P233, its more like posing in a parked Fiat Barchetta.

if you taking about just speed then the new mozilla 1.4 is faster ;)

what do you mean the webbrowser is only 1 or 2 MBs, how can you have a webbrowser without a rendering engine??
what you mean is the interface is only 1 or 2 MB (thats quite BIG for an GUI IMNSHO).

and its Gecko that offers sluggish and crashy performance.

I mean even KDE built a faster and smaller browser? what does that tell you?

OK, I give up. But, personally I like Mozilla, esp. Firebird and I consider it cool. For me, its a comfortable browser!
