View Full Version : Moving to a new server
m0h
We are currently in the process of moving Linux-Egypt to a new server :)
This may require us to switch the forum off for a little while.
Other than the brief down time, There should not be any problems (hope so ;)).
Thanks for your patience.
m0h
If you can see this post then you are accessing the site on the new server :)

operation move-forum successful
cheers,

The outage was too much for a site to be migrated from a server to another. I think there should be another way to do it.
Anyway welcome back.

Salamo 3alaikom,
Mabrook for the new server. Does this mean that the server provided by mohamed won't be used anymore?
Salam.

I didn't even feel that it was moving.
I'm browsing the site most of the day and had no problems at all.
Thanks m0h, you are doing a great job for linux and for all of us.
m0h
Which server provided by mohamed?
habdin
Salamo 3alaikom,
I thought that the linux-egypt forum web site was hosted by mohamed eldesoky's company. Correct me if I was wrong.
Salam.

I meant by outage the case where the forums were closed during the migration.
The main site www.linux-egypt.org was working fine with no problems at all and this is most probably what some ppl here r talking about so they didnt notice the migration. But if they clicked on any of the most recent posts they'll find that the forums r closed and this is considered an outage.
This outage took much time which Im not sure of it actually but it was something of hours.

This is true, I'm sure you know that the DNS changes takes some time to take place and this time differs from one ISP to anther, which means at the very same time 2 users accessing our site during the transfer process one can view the site on the old server and the other can view the one on the new site and we can't do any thing about it!
So to make sure there was not data loss - which will happen if the user seeing the old server (like you) made a post - as soon as the DNS changes started to take place and ppl started to see the site on the new server the forum on the old server was closed & our database was copied to the new server in a few mins.
This is the fastest way to copy a dynamic site, the normal way was to close the site as soon as the transfer process starts and copy it to the new server in this case you will not be able to access the site for at least 24 h to 48 h which is what I consider a too much outage.
Being not able to access the site on the new server for along time means that your ISP takes a lot of time to see DNS changes.

2 hours is ok although most members had almost zero down time its not possible to have zero down time for everyone :)
