View Full Version : Would you use a gentoo-based live rescue cd?

OneOfOne
well, i found out that the livecd lake some tools, and redhat rescue is out dated and doesn't support alot of important stuff...
so i decided to build my own livecd which includes a full system (might add X + a small WM maybe flux or something, but not sure yet)
so if anyone is interested then i'll gladly post it here.
i'm still planing it, here's what i have so far
partimage
parted/qtparted if i decide to include X
{xfs,reiserfs,ext2,ext3,befs,ntfs,fat}utils
openssh
telnetd for people that prefer the old way :p
lukemftp/gftp (with X)
cryptoloop
latest 2.4.x with xfs support and latest ck 2.4.x with allmod config.
maybe add openmosix kernel and tools if anyone is interested?
anyone is interested in ppc kernel included as well?
pppd/wvdial/adsl stuff/isdn stuff
hddtemp
hdparm
iptables
latest glibc (might add 2 of them, 1 with nptl and one without if i figure out how)
chkrootkit
hwsetup/hwdata-knoppix with an option to disable them
lvm/lvm2/raid{0,1,2,4,5} tools
devfsd
dd-rescue
links with fb support and lynx
BitchX/xchat with X
that's what i can think of for now.
any ideas?
::Question:: why based on gentoo?
1. i love gentoo
2. knoppix is too big and a mess
3. gentoo provides the livecd-ng script which makes life much easier
3. i love gentoo, again :)
all comments are welcome.

SystemRescueCD @ http://www.sysresccd.org is very good example for another gentoo livecd, so i guess i'll make my version without X.
here's a list of the packages on the sysrecuecd which i might include http://www.sysresccd.org/pkglist/sysresccd-packages-list-0.2.7_pre10.txt

i'm doing this just for learning.

Salamo 3alaikom,

I think the idea of a CD that has a fully working linux would be good. It can be useful in case you want to backup ur data without the need to mount root partitions from the HD. I think it could be handy in HD failures. Great idea OneofOne.

you might want to check BBC linux, one of the very first live CD dsitros and the first one to focus entirly on useful recovery tools.

cheers,
Alaa

update :
for some new news i won't be able to stay online that much for +/- a month so i won't be able to download needed stuff for making the livecd.
so i've delayed the whole project for a month.
