View Full Version : 7 Balls & a balance :)

ShErbO
Hi ppl,

Inspired by AlJaber's thread, titled "Burning", I've decided to share with you this riddle :)

If we have 7 similar-looking balls, of the same weight but only one of them is heavier than the others.

How do we determine the heavier one (in TWO steps) using ONLY the balls & a balance ?? (mizaaan be kaffetein).

Please give others a chance to solve it... & if u want the solution just PM me.

We ll use 6 balls of the 7 and put 3 on each side. Now we have two assumptions; either the balls on the balance are equal then the 7th ball is the required one; or they are different.
If they are different then our ball is in the most heavy side.
We can take these heavy 3 balls and with 2 balls we put 1 ball on each side of the balance. Also here we have two assumptions either they are equal then the 3rd ball is the required one or they different and the beam will point towards the heavy one.

NewComer has sent me another soultion (which I haven't thought about before), but it's quite right.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Put 2 balls in each side of the balance. If the 4 balls are identical then put two of the remaining 3 balls in the balance, each in a seperate side.If they r identical then the remaining ball is the heaviest one.. If one is heavier that the other then the heavier ball of the two is the heaviest among all balls..

back to the first step.
if the 4 balls aren't identical then the heavier pair of balls is taken and each ball of them is put on a seperate side of the balance..the one which is heavier is the heaviest ball of the 7

Thanks alot NewComer for the brilliant solution :)
