they are window managers, each have its streanths and weaknesses, you gotta try them to find what you like..
about the icons questions i have no idea, i'm a kde guy myself, habdin is the major gnome guy around here, wait for him ;)

They are DESKTOP ENVIRONMENTS not window managers.
Regarding the users' point of view:
GNOME is more lightweight, perhaps less eye candy.
smaller number of apps. are there by default.
Sorry donno about the icons problem. I neither use gnome nor do i use kde.

beware the difference between KDE and Gnome is fodder for a flame war

basicaly they offer the same functionality and as for look and feel you cannot realy compare them since both are skinable/themeable to the tiniest bit so you can make them look exactly like each other or make them look totaly different.

which one to use really depends on your taste so you need to play around with them to decide.
however you'd better spend more time trying different apps, if you find yourself using or prefering KDE apps stick to KDE, if you find you're using Gnome apps stick to gnome.

the major difference in design philosophy right now is that gnome is trying to simplify the user experience, so you get simpler dialog with less options.
KDE is trying not to make any descision for the user so it gives you all possible options in the dialogs.

it is true that KDE is much hevier than Gnome, it uses more resources memory and disk wise and takes more time to load.

but in the end they both use to much resorces to bring too little benefit IMO.

the real differences are from the point of view of the developer (wich languages and paradigms are used, which libraries, what are the licenses of the libraries).
and in the way the projects are organized (Gnome has a formal organization overseeing and steering development with much corporate support, KDE is a loosly knit group of developers cooperating in a most anarchist way with very little corporate support).

however you can still mix apps from both desktops so its not a big deal.

you might want to experimant with other desktop environments and window managers
XFCE, ROX, WindowMaker, Afterstep are alternative desktop systems
PekWM, BlackBox, FluxBox, fvwm, IceWM, Sawfish, Enlightenment and PekWM are all alternative window managers.

if you search around the forum you'll find lots of discussions on the relative merit of the major desktop environment and on assembling your own custom desktop for different components.

Salamo 3alaikom,

Could you Please post a screenshot about what your complaint? I can't help without knowing what the problem is.

SYStems
my point of view ...

okay, to have a GUI on linux we use
the X-window system

i still did not delve into the truth of how X work

but i know this so far

X-window provide a way to create graphics
but does not provide graphics
meaning, it provide a way (a c software library)
that u can use to draw graphix, a.k.a widgets
buttons we kalam menda

now some ppl create tool kits( tk )
tool kits provide widgets
and maybe a higher level view of the x library
more abstract ya3ni a simpler way to do the same thing but without worrying about a lot of the details
(ana baftee 7abaten hena, i just heard a little and glueing things together)

now gnome was made with a tk called gtk, now gtk2

kde was created with tk called qt

programs made with the same tk will look the same and possibly behave the same

some ppl have issues with the qt tk
because
one it's made in c++ (many ppl think c++ is bad idea)
two qt was not free or open source for sometime
now its free for linux but not for windows

gtk on the other hand the free community most favorite graphical tool kit
gtk stand from gimp tool kit by the way

alaa
a small footnote.
QT is not in C++ QT has extensions to C++ which is not a good idea at all, I love C++ and hate QT (but this is from a programer's point of view, to the user its a good toolkit).
GTK has a very good C++ wrapper called gtkmm

oh and BTW one of the cool features of X is that it is network transparent, this means you can run programs remotley and they'll draw their windows in your X session, whirlpool can probably tell you more about this :-)

cheers,
Alaa

in this attached picture u will see the KDE menu with icons next to each programe but in Gnome there is not so how can I make them appear ? ... my second problem is that when I try to open the Themes in the Gnome it gives me this error massege {The default theme schemas could not be found on. This means that you probably dont have metacity installed, or that your gconf is configured incorrectly} ... Thats it:)

habdin
Salamo 3alaikom,

Here is how my Gnome looks. Just a tip try to find if metacity is installed or not. If it is installed then remove all .gnome* in ur home directory and try to start Gnome.

Salam.

CVirus
my Gnome doesnt have the icons next to each picture .. how can i make them appear and how did u take a snapshot on Gnome and how can i know weather metacity is installed or not and if not how can i install it and what do u mean by remove all .gnome from my home directory and start Gnome again ???

habdin
Salamo 3alaikom,

1- How did I take a screenshot of the panel? This is easy. Install the GIMP. Start it and Choose File/Acquire/Screenshot. This will lead to a box where there is a delay in the time when u can take the screenshot. Determine the time in sec that you would take to open the panel and minimize other windows. I have set the delay to 4 sec. Choose whole Desktop. From the resulting image you can copy and paste the panel to a new file and name it to .jpg. That is my way of doing this.

2- In Linux there are 3 types of directories: a- the directories that appear without leading "." or the "~" b-Directories which appear with leading "." characters and are concerned with settings and other files related to a certain program eg .gnome or .xchat2,....etc. c- Directories which appear with tailing "~" and they are backup directories.

3- How to tell if some software is installed or not? Easy again. In a terminal type rpm -q packagename will yield package is installed if it is or package is not installed if it is not.

4- In Gnome 2.2, You would find the following directories .gnome, .gnome-private, .gnome-desktop and other .gnome directories. You would find a .gconf and .gconf2 just erase them all after you are sure that metacity is installed. Bass ya sidi.

if u mean that u need to change the loging manager then u need to do the following:

1) if u have mandrake then go to mandrake control center
there is an option to change between mdk-kdm, kdm, gdm which u want or xdm

2) if u want to do it by hand then follow this redhat related thread (Message 5) but it works the same for mandrake:

http://groups.google.ca/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&threadm=RVHu9.29579%24C53.1352702%40news2.west.cox.net&rnum=1&prev=/groups%3Fq%3DRH8%2Bfewer%2Bclicks%2Bto%2Bshutdown%253F%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26selm%3DRVHu9.29579%2524C53.1352702%2540news2.west.cox.net%26rnum%3D1

hope i understood u right at the first place.......

Salamo 3alaikom,

Enta hayel ya Cvirus. Well let me if u really deleted all the .gnome related things or not. In konqueror there is an option for showing hidden files. Why don't you post a screenshot about the contents of your home directory or even better why don't u come on IRC so I can help u more. By the way, follow w7aggag's tip. It might your solution.
