1- uname -r

2- if u have the desired environment installed u can switch from the login manager (the place where u type your user name and password), since u r using RH 9, i will guess it is gdm, at the bottom of the screen there will be a "Session" link, use it to choose kde or any other DE u want.

3- what's exactly the problem u r facing with the compiling process?
If u can't compile it (or don't want to) simply use an rpm package, search for mplayer at rpmfind.net.

sattia
2 - $ switchdesk
would help switching desktops
3 - RPMs r also avail on the mplayer website
