The first impression

by ikhnaton2 from ikhnaton2.com on Thu, 17/08/2006 - 10:15
Here we are, a domain and hosting all by me. The migration done successfully but still some fixes required specially "The Input Formats", internal links and file links.

But the first thing to notice that the new site is slower than the one at manalaa.net, although manalaa.net was hosting many sites + manalaa.net itself which has large number of visitors.

Comparing the two sites using WebSiteOptimization.com, here's the result:

Drupal Migration

from ikhnaton2.com on Sun, 13/08/2006 - 07:40

... So, I'me doing double action here, moving my site from (ikhnaton2.manalaa.net) to (ikhnaton2.com) and since my site @ manalaa.net built on Drupal 4.6 and my new site has Drupal 4.7, I have to upgrade too.

Drupal.org have good documentation for upgarding from 4.6 -> to 4.7. Basic steps are:

  1. Backup old site files and database.
  2. Delete those old files from current drupal folder.
  3. Download, extract and upload the new files to where old files was located.
  4. Copy necessary old files to the current drupal folder:
    • .htaccess
    • sites/default/settings.php
    • the 'files' directory
    • any other files you need from the 'backup' directory
  5. Login as USER 1 and run update.php

Since I don't have access to my files neither by SSH or even FTP
and I'm moving from site location to another location, I guess my steps will differ as follows:

Migrating My Site

from ikhnaton2.com on Sun, 13/08/2006 - 06:18

I have tried the last week to register a domain for my site (ikhnaton2.net) at RegisterFly as it has the lowest price for .net domains which cost $2.75 (~L.E.16) per year. I tried but the operation couldn't complete, I send email to there billing team but the email failed to be delivered to their email. I open a support ticket through their online site but no answers up until this moment.

Anyway, by chance I was checking Yahoo! Small Business Domain Registration and found very attractive offer: any domain for only $1.99 (~L.E.11.5) per first year. I immediately register my domain (ikhnaton2.com). I thought .com will be more popular than .net. I received a confirmation email that my new domain (ikhnaton2.com) is active in 45 minutes, WOW!

Backup Your Blog

from ikhnaton2.com on Sat, 22/07/2006 - 12:00

Backup your blog could be an easy task if you're running it on your hosting space. You'll probably just backup the database using phpMyAdmin and backup files using FTP. However, backup could be a hard task for bloggers using free services like Blogspot, BlogSome or Wordpress.com.

Why taking backup?
Backup is important because your priceless post could gone one day due to a hack attack, hardware failure on your blogging service provider, blocking your site or migration from blog to blog!!!

I've searched a little for ways to make blog backup easy, I'll try to introduce them here.

The third operator knocks the Egyptian mobile market

from ikhnaton2.com on Sat, 22/07/2006 - 07:39

So the story begins from 2002 when it was the first time to think of a third mobile operator in Egypt. But the plan was delayed for "the sharp decrease in the volume of local and international communications investments, shortage in liquidity as well as the non-feasibility of the project," according to Minister of Communications and IT Tareq Kamel. However, Egypt's National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) had decided to re-open up the mobile telecommunications market to a third operator by the end of 2005.

In May 2006, eleven candidates, including EgyptTelecom, Etisalat Dubai, Telecom Italia, Kuwait's MTC, Turkcell of Turkey, South Africa's MTN and Russia's MTS all presented bids for the mobile license.

Why do flowers die?

from ikhnaton2.com on Wed, 19/07/2006 - 04:45

No words to say, just a big space of silence surrending me where just those words come from far away. I hardly hear them and no tear there to flow. It's so dry...

Song: "Lover Why" by Century

A sign of time
I lost my life, forgot to die
like any man, a frightened guy.
I'm keeping memories inside
of wounded love.

But I know
I'm more than sad and more today.
I'm eating words too hard to say
a single tear and I'm away.
Away and gone...

I need you
so far from hell, so far from you
cause heaven's hard and black and gray.
You're just a someone gone away.

Methods for Tracking Blogs Comments

from ikhnaton2.com on Fri, 05/05/2006 - 16:37

In the blogoshpere world, most of the times I write comments that is important to me and want to keep an eye on interesting discussions. So, I used some methods to accomplish this and I'll explore them here.

Client-side Methods:

Bookmark all posts that's I have commented or which are interested to me to follow and tag it with common tag.

  • Create a blog for comments:

Some people create blogs and post their own comments twice, one of the original post page and second on there comment blogs with the original post URL and use this blog to follow up there blogs. I do something similar here in my drupal-based blog. Created a new content type (using felxinode) with fields like: Post Title, Post URL, Comment Body and Comment Date/Time. I used it for a while and you can find it under Linkblogs tag. However, after few posts, I found this boring and inpractical.

Ask Ikhnaton2 (My new Free/Open Support Service)

from ikhnaton2.com on Mon, 10/04/2006 - 07:45
I've been spending many years supporting people in different mailing lists, Yahoo! groups, forums or even on individual bases using private emails and on-site support. This has been always on volunteering bases. Actually, I enjoy supporting others and it's (for sure) widing my knowledge and experiences.

AskTom was one of my prefered sites to find answers about Oracle. Expert Exchange is another prefered place for me to support others. On the other hand, contribution in different FOSS (Free/Open Source Software) communities has taught me many aspects about supporting and learning from others.

All of this had make me think from long time to create my support forum (lets call it Ask Ikhnaton2 for instance) as a free service for supporting others in the topics in which I've enough knowledge. And here it's my initial step (goto: Ask Ikhnaton2 forum), wish it'll success. You could ask in any of the provided topics and I'll answer as soon as possible. There's no SLA (Service Level Agreement) for sure as it's a volunteering activity but I'll try my best. I don't assume I'm expert in all of the provided topics but I could give a hand for sure.
