Give her credit. Maybe it was a bit sexist of her to say "all men are pigs" (though you have to admit it is a topic worth some research) and maybe she is law ignorant, but I am sure she was willing to say something more about "law and culture" that you and her and me and every Egyptian is AWARE OF. See, a woman cannot simply report rape over here for a million number of reasons that are culturally biased on one hand and because of the inefficiency of the law on the other hand. Assume you are sitting in your house and a thug comes and sits in it claiming it is his and you seek the law route, maybe this thug would be having children going to the same university as your kid before you gain your "right" to sit in your own house. Got what I am trying to say? Maybe we have the same just laws as the US on this matter but we definetely dont have the same practices.

I was not going to respond to the comment made by e-m0ti0n but since thankfully someone tried to defend me I will say please read my comment carefully. When I talked about the law I was NOT referring to rape; I know there are laws everywhere against rape although in any Arab country you would find a healthy dose of blame landed on the woman (she must somehow brought it on herself) Anyway back to the law; I am not aware of any sexual harassments laws in Egypt but since I haven’t lived there in 15 years I might be wrong and therefore stand corrected. So please let me know if there is a low that prevents a man from saying a sexually oriented comment to a woman. For example if someone here at work said something to me (words not touching or anything like that) that might carry a sexual meaning I could report him and if the place I work in didn’t do something about it I could sue them for failing to protect me. Ok back to rape; a man can go to jail here for “raping” his wife; meaning she said “no honey I am not in the mode tonight” and he didn’t pay attention and forced himself on her anyway. And there are also laws against someone on the street sexually harassing women using words but women don’t usually bother reporting them if they happen but the point is they don’t happen not because the men don’t want to but because they can’t and that bring me to the “pig” comment which our friend e-m0ti0n took great exception to (I wonder why!!); believe it or not I didn’t mean to insult men but e-m0ti0n’s comment about “knockin' down some piece of a**” is a further proof to the “pigs” theory.

we do have laws that could be used in such cases in Egypt, but they're not being enforced.

you see you can't bring criminal charges against anyone you can only inform the police and it's up to the police to respond or ignore.

besides you'll live through hell if you try it, society protects such acts, I'm not saying the law can't be improved, it probably needs loads of improvements but the law alone won't fix anything, you have to have mechanisms to implement it and some social acceptance (laws that don't reflect acceptable norms are doomed, you can fix society by laws).

I don't doubt it, I think I actually wrote that in the post, it's just that we need to look deeper t understand.
