I get the impression that sunnis are plauged by an ideology that refuses spiritual connection through stuff like music, that considers all forms of popular religous rituals as blasphemies, I've met many who consider music to be haram all together.

this is usually attributed to the wahabi influence.

does this explain it all? probably not

I think since sunnis are the majority (at least in the arab speaking world), they don't look at themselves as a group, so the religious art that comes out of them is not classified as sunni art.

I did listen to some very good chants by egyptian groups 'فرق الانشاد الديني' but can't remember what the subject was, it involved loving the prophet me thinks.
